AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Board of Trustees of the University of Chicago has bestowed the school’s highest honor on one of its former students and leading philanthropists. David Booth, Founder and Executive Chairman of Dimensional Fund Advisors (Dimensional), was presented the University of Chicago Medal during a ceremony yesterday at the school.
The University of Chicago Medal recognizes individuals for their distinguished service to the university and has been awarded to 23 people since it was established in 1976.
“The University Medal acknowledges the transformative support that Booth has provided to the university to ensure that the University of Chicago Booth School of Business remains one of the world’s leading business schools,” said Madhav Rajan, Dean of Chicago Booth.
Booth’s connections to the University of Chicago run deep, and he earned his MBA from the school in 1971. As a research assistant under Nobel laureate Eugene Fama, Booth studied the financial theories that became the foundation of Dimensional, his investment management firm.
“I credit the rigorous training I received at the graduate business school for my part in the success of building Dimensional," Booth said. “Chicago’s focus on groundbreaking research and theory has had a tremendous impact on real-world finance and has helped to change the way the world invests for the better.”
Booth has been a significant supporter of the University of Chicago for decades. He currently serves on the university’s Board of Trustees, is a member of the Board of Overseers for the Becker Friedman Institute for Research in Economics, and is a lifetime member of the Booth School of Business advisory council. He has contributed to the funding of several professorships; contributed to the construction of the Charles M. Harper Center that houses Chicago Booth’s full-time MBA and PhD programs, research centers, and institutes; and in 2008, made the largest gift ever to a business school.
