VEP Healthcare Congratulates Partner Santa Clara Valley Medical Center on Earning Joint Commission Sepsis Certification

The recognition validates adherence by SCVMC and VEP to rigorous guidelines for sepsis prevention, diagnosis, and treatment

CONCORD, Calif.--()--VEP Healthcare congratulates its partner Santa Clara Valley Medical Center (SCVMC) of Santa Clara, California, on earning Sepsis Certification from The Joint Commission.

SCVMC delivers a full range of healthcare services and is recognized as a center of excellence for the following specialties: burns, diabetes, trauma, children’s health, rehabilitation, and women’s care. The hospital is dedicated to the health of the whole community and has delivered high quality, compassionate, and safe care for residents of Santa Clara County for more than 140 years. SCVMC’s multidisciplinary Sepsis Program team educates providers and staff and develops tools to promote the early detection and treatment of sepsis throughout the hospital. VEP Healthcare providers support the diagnosis and treatment of patients in SCVMC’s emergency department (ED).

VEP serves more than 30 hospitals nationwide and has an excellent track record of increasing both patient satisfaction and quality metrics. For SCVMC, VEP has implemented proven programs to optimize the quality and value of care, including RPM (Rapid Patient Management™) that helps emergency departments provide comprehensive care as quickly as possible.

Now, certification by The Joint Commission signifies that SCVMC, and the VEP Healthcare providers based at the SCVMC ED, adhere to rigorous guidelines for sepsis prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

Sepsis is the body’s life-threatening response to an infection. Without prompt treatment, sepsis can rapidly lead to tissue damage, organ failure, and death. According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 1.5 million people in the US get sepsis each year. More than a quarter million die. And about one in three patients who die in a hospital have sepsis. Sepsis is the most expensive disease to treat in the hospital, costing approximately $17 billion dollars annually. To reduce the risk of sepsis, healthcare facilities and professionals follow rigorous guidelines for diagnosing and managing the condition. Early detection and appropriate treatment of sepsis can decrease mortality, improve patient outcomes, and decrease the length of stay in hospitals.

“SCVMC, along with our partner VEP Healthcare, is committed to reducing the risk of sepsis,” states Paul E. Lorenz, Chief Executive Officer of Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. “Our goal is to prevent infection in our hospital and throughout our community.”

Adds Steven Maron, MD, President and CEO of VEP Healthcare, “Joint Commission certification validates our shared efforts to eradicate sepsis at SCVMC and at all our partner hospitals.”
