X-IO to sell storage business to Violin Systems, apply more muscle and resources to its FabricXpress converged server, NVMe edge-computing and HCI platform and solutions

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.--()--X-IO Technologies today announced it has signed a letter of intent with Violin Systems, LLC to sell its X-IO Intelligent Storage Element (ISE) business and renamed itself Axellio Inc., an independent company that will focus exclusively on advancing its rapidly-growing edge-computing and hyper-converged intrastructure (HCI) business.

The Axellio FabricXpress® platform was introduced in May 2017 as an edge-computing platform for streaming big data analytics. The technology has since evolved into multiple solution platforms for use as edge micro clouds, HCI, and micro data centers.

Today, Axellio customers are testing and deploying Axellio solutions to solve problems with throughput, latency, capacity, space, power, cooling and transportability in edge data capture, streaming analytics, cyber security, visualization, virtual and augmented reality, and other applications across finance, defense, aerospace, healthcare, transportation, retail, manufacturing, and entertainment industries. Recognized for its affordability, performance simplicity, and availability, Axellio has developed an ecosystem of partners around its edge-computing platform.

Axellio will operate as a separate company in the same location with many former X-IO employees who have been developing the edge computing platform for the past three years.

“After two decades of building innovative storage solutions, we are pleased that Violin Systems plans to acquire our storage array business to expand its portfolio of leading-edge solutions and services,” said X-IO CEO Bill Miller. “The two product families will benefit from significant synergies in the extreme performance flash storage arrays market, while Axellio completes its vision of developing leading edge-computing and hyper-converged infrastructure solutions.”

Axellio’s FabricXpress converges storage and server compute capabilities using NVMe/PCIe fabric for performance, bandwidth, density, and cost that enables the next generation of capabilities for video streaming, machine learning, artificial intelligence, cyber security, financial market data, defense and intelligence, and Internet of Things (IoT). According to Gartner, more than 20 percent of businesses-critical applications will be running in HCI by 2020; and 40 percent of enterprise organizations will have an edge computing strategy in place by 2021.

Axellio platforms and solutions provide 30 percent more performance at half the cost of traditional data center solutions, requires 90 percent less power and cooling and 93 percent less space.

The Axellio product family has evolved into four solutions:

  • Hyper-Converged Infrastructure - A powerful appliance designed with Microsoft Windows Server Software-Defined (WSSD) solutions, based on Microsoft Windows Server 2016 and 2019.
  • Micro Cloud - A purpose-built solution for implementing scalable cloud architectures and running cloud native applications, while providing the speed needed to offer real-time insights.
  • Micro Data Center - A 2U architecture that incorporates graphics processing units to run machine-generated data, data analysis, crypto-currency, and complex problem solving.
  • Portable Axellio - An edge-computing system in two suitcases that meet commercial airline standards, including one suitcase small enough to carry on the plane. The portable Axellio enables IT teams to travel simply, effectively and flexibly to set up a mobile data center anywhere at a moment’s notice.
