HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Four Houston high-achievers earned top honors as the 2019 Women in Science with Excellence (WISE) honorees, BioHouston announced today. The award recognizes women in science-related roles who have made significant contributions in science, technology, engineering or mathematics.

“For the past 10 years, BioHouston’s WISE awards program has turned the spotlight on the high level of STEM talent in the region,” said Ann Tanabe, Chief Executive Officer for BioHouston. “The latest group of honorees joins an elite roster of women that includes astronauts, world-renowned medical researchers, educators and inventors. Many of our honorees blazed trails that opened up new career options for women.”
Brief bios of the 2019 WISE honorees are below. Their stories will be told at length during the 10th Annual WISE Luncheon at River Oaks Country Club on Friday, January 18, 2019.
The event is chaired by Margaret Kripke, Ph.D., a 2011 WISE honoree. “The stories of our honorees are always inspiring,” said Kripke. “These are women leaders who have reached positions of influence within their disciplines. They are eager to share their experiences – the challenges and the successes – so that the next generation of women in STEM-related fields can see that the rewards are worth the work.”

Maria Elena Bottazzi, Ph.D.
Dr. Bottazzi is Associate Dean,
National School of Tropical Medicine, Baylor College of Medicine and
Professor, Department of Pediatrics (Tropical Medicine) and Molecular
Virology and Microbiology at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas
Children’s Hospital.
Sharon Dent, Ph.D.
Dr. Dent is the J. Ralph Meadows Chair,
Department of Epigenetics and Molecular Carcinogenesis and Director of
the Virginia Harris Cockrell Cancer Research Center at the Science Park
campus of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Vicki Hollub
Ms. Hollub is President and CEO of Occidental
Petroleum, an international oil and gas exploration company with
operations in the U.S., Middle East and Latin America. In 2016, she
became the first woman CEO of a major U.S. oil and gas company.
Marcia O’Malley, Ph.D.
Dr. O’Malley is the Stanley C. Moore
Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Professor of Computer Science,
Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Advisor to the
Provost at Rice University.
