CAMARILLO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Semtech Corporation (Nasdaq: SMTC), a leading supplier of analog and mixed-signal semiconductors and advanced algorithms, announced its extended Internet of Things (IoT) collaboration with Alibaba Cloud at the Alibaba Cloud Computing Conference 2018 as they work together toward having every enterprise adopt Semtech’s LoRa® devices and wireless radio frequency technology (LoRa Technology). The joint effort secures and establishes the radio spectrum for the rapid growth of IoT solutions for multiple vertical markets and new use cases in China, including logistics tracking, air quality, food safety compliance, and smoke detecting safety.
Alibaba Cloud introduced the industry’s first LoRa-based Airship Balloon, which connected sensors from 20 meters underground to 40,000 meters above ground demonstrating the extensive capabilities of LoRa Technology including long range, simple and flexible network deployment.
“Alibaba Cloud Arial IoT LoRa Station connects from 20 meters underground to 40,000 meters in the space,” said Wei Wu, Director of Ecological Cooperation, Alibaba Cloud IoT. “As one of the leading enterprise members of the LoRa Alliance™, Alibaba Cloud continuously promotes the progress and popularization of LoRa Technology in China as well as globally. It provides a complete set of low-power, wide area network solutions for key industries in China including smart meters, smart cities, smart manufacturing, smart agriculture and other fields.”
To more than 60,000 attendees, Alibaba Cloud demonstrated at the conference one of the new use cases in a video that displayed an unmanned vehicle delivering a package with real-time tracking and event detection. Indicating that in the near future, China’s IoT industry will leverage Semtech’s LoRa Technology due to its long range, low power capabilities with a simple, flexible network to develop innovative and unique use cases to complement the connectivity of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and cellular technologies.
“Semtech’s collaboration with Alibaba Cloud is fueling the device, network and application (DNA) of IoT in China,” said Marc Pegulu, Vice President and General Manager of Semtech’s Wireless and Sensing Products Group. “LoRa will be the enabler of low power connected devices with its key capabilities – simple, flexible, proven, and easy to deploy. Our collaboration with Alibaba Cloud strengthens LoRa to become a core technology for the IoT industry. The abundant amount of low power IoT use cases emerging in China leveraging Semtech’s LoRa Technology will position the platform as the de facto IoT solution, and we anticipate Alibaba will be one of the industry leaders as it strengthens its ecosystem of IoT partners in China.”
