Société de l 'assurance automobile du Québec awards Smart Start Canada ULC a five-year contract for the management of Quebec's alcohol ignition interlock program

1A Smart Start LLC ("Smart Start"), the global leader in alcohol ignition interlock program services and technologies, today announced that its Smart Start Canada ULC subsidiary has been awarded a five-year contract to manage the alcohol ignition interlock program of the Société d'assurance automobile du Québec (Société).

The Société, whose mission is to protect persons against the risks associated with road use, is responsible for the application of the Highway Safety Code and the Automobile Insurance Act. In addition to Quebec, Smart Start operates as the exclusive supplier in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

"Smart Start is pleased to increase its footprint in Canada by supporting the Société in improving road safety in Quebec," said President and CEO Matt Strausz. "Our business is focused on customer service and superior products to make our roads safer and change lives. We look forward to serving our first customers in Quebec by the end of 2018."

Founded in 1992, Smart Start is the most trusted manufacturer of alcohol ignition interlock devices in Canada. It is also one of the largest suppliers of alcohol ignition interlock devices in North America, as well as a world leader in its field. Smart Start also provides alcohol monitoring products to judicial authorities as well as those convicted of impaired driving. These products are designed and manufactured in the United States to serve our customers in the US and in 18 countries, including Canada, thanks to our 700 employees. Smart Start Canada is headquartered in Sherwood Park, Alberta. As well, the company served its one millionth customer in October 2017.

In addition to its success as a partner of local, state and provincial monitoring agencies in preventing alcohol-impaired drivers from starting vehicles, Smart Start works with national organizations such as MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) to improve the laws on alcohol ignition interlock devices. Today, several jurisdictions have enacted alcohol ignition interlock device regulations so that offenders use an interlock device after their first arrest. Studies indicate that laws that affect all offenders help to drastically reduce impaired driving recidivism by changing the behavior and choices of offenders.
