Mississippi Receives National Award for Government Experience

Mississippi’s electronic government services ranked Top 5 among the Nation’s best

JACKSON, Miss.--()--The official website of the State of Mississippi, ms.gov, and the innovative services available to Mississippi citizens on the site won fourth place in the Center for Digital Government's second annual Government Experience Awards.

These awards recognize the achievements and best practices of states, cities and counties that have gone to the web and beyond to radically improve the experience of government and push the boundaries of how citizen services are delivered. This is the fourth consecutive year Mississippi has placed in the Top 5 of the Center for Digital Government’s prestigious government awards.

“We are especially gratified that Mississippi has been nationally recognized, once again, for our proven leadership in digital government and our exceptional user experience offerings,” said Dr. Craig Orgeron, Executive Director of Mississippi Information Technology Services and State of Mississippi Chief Information Officer. “We are proud of the continued accomplishments ms.gov receives for its enterprise digital government experience that encompasses more than 250 services delivered to citizens through a responsive and chatbot-integrated website and an ever-growing personalized government platform, MyMississippi.”

Ms.gov offers an easy, convenient way for Mississippians to access more than 250 online services, including driver license renewals, hunting and fishing license purchases, and MISSI, the state’s award winning digital government chatbot. In 2017 alone, Mississippi’s electronic government technology served more than 500,000 visitors and over 610,000 transactions across all online services. It securely processed more than $70 million in digital government transactions—a 10% digital adoption increase over 2016.

Additional notable innovations available on ms.gov include:

  • Ask Mississippi Digital Voice Assistant – the Amazon Alexa and Google Home skills allow for direct citizen to government communication simply by using your voice. Users can ask, “Alexa, ask Mississippi if there any traffic alerts in my area,” and “Alexa, ask Mississippi for my local news.” The Ask Mississippi platform supports many additional state services including asking for when a user’s driver’s license expires, state facts and even phone numbers to state agencies.
  • MISSI, the ms.gov Chatbot – The state of Mississippi’s first chatbot, MISSI, provides support for over 200 searched for inquiries, making government support available 24/7. Accessible from ms.gov and on citizens’ mobile devices, MISSI is able to direct users to what they are looking for, whether it is renewing their hunting license, or helping locate unclaimed property. Since the June 2017 launch, MISSI has helped answer over 7,000 questions, further improving the availability of ms.gov’s citizen support.
  • Virtual Capitol Tour – The augmented reality powered tour of the Mississippi State Capitol transports viewers directly inside the capitol with exclusive access to six historic areas. Users can access the Virtual Capitol Tour directly from ms.gov using a VR headset, mobile device, or computer.

The entire ms.gov platform development, hosting, and maintenance, valued at over $2 million, has been developed at no-cost to the state of Mississippi through a self-funded, public-private partnership between the state of Mississippi and eGovernment partner, Mississippi Interactive.
