NEW YORK--()--Kroll, a division of Duff & Phelps, a global leader in risk mitigation, investigations, compliance, cyber resilience, security and incident response solutions, announced today that Associate Managing Directors Julieanne Himelstein and John Mazzella were recently honored with awards for their extraordinary work. Himelstein will be presented with the U.S. Attorney General’s Award for “Extraordinary Work to Prosecute Participants of Deadly Benghazi Attack” at the 66th Annual Attorney General’s Awards ceremony on October 24. The Attorney General’s Awards are given annually to a select group of individuals who demonstrate outstanding dedication and service in carrying out the mission of the U.S. Department of Justice. Mazzella will be presented with the U.S. Attorney’s Law Enforcement Award for his work in the identification of individuals involved in the Benghazi attack and participation in the investigation and prosecution of United States v. Ahmed Salim Faraj Abu Khattalah. Himelstein and Mazzella are members of Kroll’s Business Intelligence and Investigations practice, based in New York.

Himelstein and Mazzella were recognized for their extraordinary contributions in identifying, capturing and prosecuting terrorists responsible for the September 2012 attack on the U.S. Diplomatic Mission in Benghazi, Libya. The attack resulted in the deaths of Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and U.S. government personnel Sean Smith, Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty.

“Julieanne and John each had a distinguished career with the U.S. Department of Justice before joining Kroll; receiving these awards, the highest honors bestowed by the Department, is a fitting culmination to their years of dedicated public service,” said William Nugent, Regional Managing Director, North America, for Kroll’s Business Intelligence and Investigations practice. “I am very proud that Julieanne and John chose to continue their careers with Kroll, recognizing that we share their commitment to a resolute pursuit of facts, professional excellence and superior client service. On behalf of the entire firm, I congratulate and commend them on this terrific achievement.”

Himelstein was the co-lead prosecutor in U.S. v. Abu Khatallah, in which Ahmed Abu Khatallah was found guilty of federal terrorism charges by a jury in November 2017. She worked from the time of the attack on September 11, 2012 to build a meticulous case against the accused, which involved close coordination with numerous law enforcement agencies and the intelligence community. Mazzella was one of the investigators on the case whose work helped identify several key attackers.
