AMSTERDAM--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Media Coding Industry Forum (MC-IF) today announced its formation and invited press and the public to its launch event in Amsterdam on September 16, during IBC2018.
The MC-IF will complement the longstanding, successful technical activities of the MPEG ISO/IEC standardization group by working on areas that are difficult for a standards body to address, such as licensing. MC-IF brings together many of the most productive developers of coding technologies with users of advanced media standards, representing the entire media service and distribution ecosystem.
In a joint effort with ITU-T’s Video Coding Expert Group, MPEG recently started to develop Versatile Video Coding (VVC). VVC is the next major international video coding standard, anticipated to be broadly deployed in a wide variety of applications, including streaming, broadcast, cinema, gaming, video conferencing, and surveillance. The VVC standard is expected to be the perfect complement to emerging delivery protocols and networks, such as 5G, enabling the delivery of higher quality video services to an ever-growing audience. MC-IF will initially focus on establishing VVC and related standards as well-accepted and widely used standards, for the benefit of consumers and industry.
MC-IF is an open international forum that will facilitate cross-industry discussion on non-technical aspects surrounding the deployment of media standards, notably including licensing. It will also be a hub for information related to implementations, tools, and guidelines for usage of VVC and related standards.
The initial members of MC-IF include b<>com, Bitmovin, CableLabs, Canon, Digital Insights, Divideon, Ericsson, Harmonic, HEVC Advance, InterDigital, MediaKind, NGCodec, Nokia, OP Solutions, Technicolor, Tencent, Unified Patents, and Zetacast.
Any organization that supports the goals of MC-IF is invited to join the Forum. To allow the broadest possible participation, the Forum’s annual membership fee is set at USD $8,500, and there is a special USD $1,000 rate available to not-for-profits and entities with annual revenue of less than USD $10 million. Anyone with an interest in learning more about MC-IF is invited to attend the launch event, which will include a presentation of the Forum’s objectives and mode of operation, and conclude with a Q&A session where attendees can ask questions of MC-IF representatives.
The launch event will be held during IBC2018 at the Heineken Experience in Amsterdam, at 17:00 CEST on September 16 and no preregistration is required. Additional information about MC-IF and details of the launch event can be found at www.mc-if.org. Questions about MC-IF may be sent to info@mc-if.org.
