LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Three members of the medical staff of Los Angeles’ Orthopaedic Institute for Children (OIC), including the organization’s chief executive officer, will comprise the faculty for an afternoon of important clinical lectures to kick off the 75th annual Brennemann Lectures program on Sept. 21 in Anaheim. The sessions are part of a three-day educational event sponsored by the Los Angeles Pediatric Society.
The lecture series will begin with Jennifer Beck, M.D., associate director of the Center for Sports Medicine at OIC, delivering a talk on “It’s Not Just a Knee Sprain.” Through a review of anatomy, physical exam and differential diagnosis, pediatricians will learn the fundamentals of pediatric knee injuries as well as indications for emergency room, medical sports medicine and operative sports medicine referrals.
Rachel Thompson, M.D., associate director of the Center for Cerebral Palsy at UCLA/OIC, will discuss “How to Screen and Treat Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip” (DDH). Here attendees will learn to recognize common risk factors associated with DDH and how to perform a meaningful hip examination on newborns and toddlers. The session is also designed to raise familiarity with common treatment modalities of DDH.
Rounding out the afternoon session will be a lecture on “Back Pain in Young Athletes,” conducted by Anthony Scaduto, M.D., president and CEO of OIC and executive vice chair, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. During this important session, pediatricians will learn how to evaluate when back pain in a young athlete is more than just overuse and gain a better understanding of the symptoms of back pain by enhancing their knowledge on how to properly examine patients for other possible back issues such as spondylolisthesis, Scheuermann’s kyphosis and degenerative disk disease.
All of the lectures provided by OIC are free with attendees eligible to receive continuing medical education (CME) credit and MOC Part 2 credit for each lecture attended.
The Brennemann Lectures are one of the oldest pediatric CME meetings on the west coast and consistently present relevant information in an environment that promotes communication between faculty and attendees. Over the years the lectures have involved countless renowned medical doctors, prominent political leaders and noted entertainment figures. More than 120 pediatricians and allied health professionals are expected to attend this year’s event.
