CHIBA, Japan--(BUSINESS WIRE)--ABLIC Inc. (hereinafter “ABLIC”), the semiconductor manufacturer, launched the S-5420, a UV light photodiode manufactured from silicon (*2) that detects UV light from the UV-A to the UV-B range (*3).
The S-5420 detects UV light without a filter by calculating the difference between high and low-sensitivity photodiode signals to remove visible light. The filter-less structure enables compact applications and prevents filter-induced attenuation. The compact transparent resin package expands the design flexibility of wearable devices.
This product is co-developed by a research team led by professors Shigetoshi Sugawa and Rihito Kuroda at the Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku University.
(*1) Based on our research as of June 2018.
(*2) A UV light
photodiode manufactured from silicon: Silicon semiconductors are highly
versatile and silicon sensors readily lend themselves to the future
evolution of circuit integration and high performance.
(*3) UV
light from the UV-A to the UV-B range: The wavelength of UV-A is 315 -
400 nm, and UV-B is 280 - 315 nm, respectively.
Thanks to the use of silicon semiconductors, the S-5420 can measure UV
light from the UV-A range, which causes skin blemishes and wrinkles, to
the UV-B range, which causes sunburn. The small size of the S-5420
transparent resin package makes it easy to fit it into a variety of
wearable devices allowing anyone to easily measure UV light intensity.
Compact
size also promises high design flexibility of industrial devices like UV
irradiance and exposure meters.
Major Features
1. Detects UV light from the UV-A to the UV-B
range.
2. Eliminates the need for a filter by calculating
the difference between the two photodiodes.
3. Compact resin
package
Application Examples
- UV index meters
- UV light
