Indegy Expert to Present Session on Cyber Threat Landscape at ISA Water/Wastewater Symposium

Chris Grove will Explain How and Why Utilities are at Risk from External Attacks, and What Can be Done to Mitigate Exposure to Them

--()--Indegy:

WHO:

Chris Grove, CISSP, NSA-IAM, is Director of Industrial Security at Indegy and has more than 25 years of experience in cyber security. Previously, Chris managed large scale data and application security projects at Imperva for government and defense agencies, law enforcement and the intelligence community. He has presented at Black Hat, RSA, InfoSec, and Gartner conferences on cloud security, hacking, cyber-defense strategies and more.

WHAT:

Although news headlines tend to focus on the cyber threat to the electric grid, water utilities are not immune to ransomware and other threats. In fact, they may be even more vulnerable. One of the primary reasons is that utility operations, not just billing and customer service functions, are increasingly connected to the internet. This includes pump stations and treatment systems. Internet connectivity enables operators to remotely monitor systems and reduce maintenance costs. Attackers have noticed, and are exploiting utility system weaknesses. While most accidents go unreported, the hack of a dam in New York in the summer of 2013 did make the news. In this session, Don’t Let Cyber Attacks Leave You ‘Dead in the Water’, Chris will discuss how cyber attackers can breach water utility networks and their operational systems to compromise water safety and availability. He will explain the security gaps that expose utilities to external threats and discuss what type of security controls can be implemented to reduce risk and improve operations.

About ISA Water/Wastewater Symposium
Presented by the ISA Water and Wastewater Industries Division, in collaboration with the WEF Intelligent Water Technology Committee and the Chesapeake AWWA Section, the WWAC Symposium helps professionals in the water and wastewater industries understand how instrumentation, SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition), and automatic control applications are vital to the treatment and distribution of water; the collection and treatment of wastewater; and the management of stormwater. The symposium also provides an excellent opportunity to gain valuable technical information, networking, professional development, and continuing education credits (CEUs and PDHs).
