APWA Awards City of Minneapolis, SEH with 2018 Project of the Year

ST. PAUL, Minn.--()--Short Elliott Hendrickson (SEH®) and the City of Minneapolis have been honored with the American Public Works Association’s (APWA) prestigious 2018 Project of the Year Award (Transportation category, $25-75 million) as a result of their collaboration during the City’s Nicollet Mall Redesign and Reconstruction.

Each year, APWA presents the Public Works Projects of the Year Awards to “promote excellence in the management and administration of public works projects” – recognizing unique, community-focused achievements. Winners are selected by a committee of more than 20 co-chairs, project managers, senior engineers and public service leaders from across the U.S.

“We’re thrilled to receive APWA’s Project of the Year Award alongside the City of Minneapolis, and above all to see the City’s investments in the community rewarded,” said Justin Gese, SEH Project and Construction Manager. “The careful coordination of construction, safety and communication has provided an elegant new heart of the City – promoting community, sustainability and a greener future.”

The Nicollet Mall is a lively, 12-block stretch in the heart of Downtown Minneapolis, featuring 250,000 daily pedestrians and motorists, as well as 34 million square feet of office space, store fronts and a major bus transit corridor. The three-year, $50 million project included complete redesign and reconstruction (including utility relocation) of all 12 blocks.

The City selected SEH to provide construction management as part of a project team that included City staff, a design team, SEH and contractors. SEH was responsible for design review, constructability and cost-estimating reviews, value engineering, utility coordination and construction administration. SEH also led public involvement throughout construction and was responsible for managing the removal, storage, conservation, renovation and reinstallation of the City’s existing public art collection.

Construction management began during preliminary design. By providing these services early in the design phase, the team was able to anticipate potential schedule and phasing issues, which was key for such a visible and prominent project. This was also integral to ensuring the City’s hard deadline was met; the community was set to host the Big Game in February 2018 with planned festivities taking place across Nicollet Mall.

The City’s final product has created a more pedestrian friendly, green and sustainable corridor. Of note, 400 onsite employees provided 95,000 labor hours without any time lost to injury. Pedestrians and motorists were able to navigate the area without a single accident.
