REDLANDS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Esri, the global leader in location intelligence, today announced ArcGIS Online has been granted an authority to operate by the United States Department of the Interior (US DOI) as a secure platform to deliver cloud-based spatial analytics services to the U.S. Federal Government. Esri’s technology has achieved Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP) authorization on both Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services Cloud platforms.
FedRAMP authorization ensures that Esri can continue to provide its users with the benefits of security controls that are tailored to cloud services. The authorization also makes it easier for other federal agencies to obtain security documentation and authorize their own ArcGIS Online offering within days or weeks, instead of months.
Esri is helping its customers use its services securely by providing the federal government with cost savings and ensuring all agencies can access workflow-specific apps, maps, and data from anywhere in the world, as well as tools for the field. Compliance is expedited through ArcGIS Online’s availability on the FedRAMP Marketplace. Now, agencies from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to the National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA), can take advantage of geospatial technology that aligns with the stringent security control requirements of the recent General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 27k security standards.
FedRAMP is a U.S. government-wide program that provides a standardized approach to security assessment, authorization, and continuous monitoring for cloud products and services. This shift to FedRAMP authorization comes after three years of ArcGIS Online authorization for the Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) Low Authority to Operate (ATO). FedRAMP provides even more security improvements, including ensuring all new organizational customer datasets are encrypted at rest and in transport by default.
“Location data has become critical for organizations now that we are increasingly connected via Internet of Things and digital twin networks," said Jack Dangermond, Esri founder and president. "We are proud to provide location intelligence services to federal customers in a secure environment.”
FedRAMP authorization provides secure GIS technology to support analysis, policy making, and planning across any federal agency, while also fostering valuable collaboration between government organizations. ArcGIS Online extends and strengthens the government’s use of geospatial information through compliance with open data requirements, and by making actionable information widely available to the general public through easy-to-understand maps.
