NATIONAL BLACK MBA ASSOCIATION® HOSTS LEADERS OF TOMORROW® SUMMIT IN ATLANTA
High school students from across the country traveled to participate in the 2018 National Black MBA Association® Leaders of Tomorrow Leadership Summit® (LOT®) last weekend at the Georgia Institute of Technology for four days of competition, networking and youth leadership training. Within the LOT® Summit – from Wednesday, June 27, through Sunday, July 1 – engaging breakout sessions were held with motivational speakers and inspiring business leaders, along with college and corporate campus tours, a visit to the National Center for Civil and Human Rights and culminating with the 17th Annual National Business Case Competition on Saturday. Designed to bring teams together to develop solutions to everyday business challenges, teams from chapters across the country had the opportunity to present to judges from major corporations.
For each year’s LOT® Case Competition, teams brainstorm solutions around a specific business topic and present their ideas to a panel of esteemed judges. This year’s challenge involved presenting strategies to increase users and generate sales for the Twitter platform. A total of 17 LOT® Chapter case teams competed to be named amongst the top three finalists selected to compete in front of all the Summit attendees.
“Since its inception in 1991, the NBMBAA® LOT® Program has mentored more than 8,000 talented youth aspiring to leadership roles in professional fields, and more than $500,000 in academic scholarships has been awarded. I’m excited to announce that the LOT® Case Competition scholarship award will increase from $30K to $40K in 2019, as well,” shared Jesse Tyson, President and CEO of NBMBAA® at Saturday’s event.
During the awards ceremony, the grand prize of $15,000 was awarded to the Dallas LOT® Chapter, with Detroit LOT® Chapter garnering the second place, $10,000 spot and the Philadelphia LOT® Chapter in third place winning a $5,000 scholarship.
Jackie Bragg, a mother of a participating student, expressed her thoughts on the program: “I don’t have the words to express my gratitude to each of you for believing in my son and pushing him to excel beyond his own imagination. Therefore, I will say simply ‘thank you’ for drawing him out, holding him accountable, giving him an opportunity to be part of an incredible experience, not just today, but accepting him into the program.”
Today, LOT® has evolved into a comprehensive programmatic approach for providing leadership development and skills to high school youth. The program is driven by a strong mentoring component across four areas: Leadership, Financial and STEM Literacy, College Preparation and Career Preparation. The program offers not only scholarships but also students are exposed to resources and business contacts that help to ensure academic excellence during the participants high school years.
The National Black MBA Association® thanks this year’s event sponsors: FedEx, Georgia Institute of Technology, Marriott International, Georgia Power, Mercedes-Benz and the Arconic Foundation.
