Envision Plastics Celebrates World Oceans Day by Keeping 70 Million Plastic Bottles Out of Ocean

Plastic Recycler Celebrates One Year of Producing OceanBound Plastic

ATLANTA--()--The theme of this year’s World Oceans Day is Preventing Plastic Pollution, and no company is doing that better than Envision Plastics. As of June 2018, Envision is right on track to reach its goal of processing 10 million pounds of post-consumer recycled HDPE known as OceanBound Plastic. Envision’s OceanBound Plastic is made from recycled plastic collected from at-risk areas and is designed to stop plastic from reaching beaches and waterways, where it would otherwise become marine debris.

In 2017, Envision committed to recycling 10 million pounds of OceanBound Plastic over two years. This June marks that halfway point, and Envision has recycled 5 million pounds of HDPE or the equivalent of 35 million milk jugs. Envision’s OceanBound Plastic is an innovative approach to addressing the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch.” Envision works with local organizations to collect HDPE bottles and jugs before they enter the ocean from locations that lack solid waste management programs, such as Haiti and remote, coastal regions in Mexico. This “source” plastic is shipped to Envision’s plants in California and North Carolina where it is processed using advanced technology to ensure the highest quality.

The company uses its patented Deodorized Resin™ technology to clean and remove odors from the HDPE resin, ensuring it can be used at 100 percent recycled content in new products. Envision Plastics has had numerous partners use its OceanBound Plastic in consumer products and packaging over the last year, including OceanWorks, ReYuze phone cases, Juniper Networks, Island Creek Oyster Knives and ViTA.

Earlier this year, ViTA released the first bottle made of 100 percent OceanBound Plastic for its ViTA hair care line. The collaboration resulted in Envision and ViTA receiving the Sustainable Packaging Coalition’s Innovator of the Year award in April.

“We are committed to helping protect the oceans through our OceanBound Plastic line, but we need companies to join us by buying this resin to sustain and grow this program,” said Dan Ferus, General Manager of Envision Plastics. “We encourage companies to join Envision in this undertaking by using OceanBound Plastic in their products and packaging.
