Briefing for the Press on How to Responsibly Report on Death by Suicide

NEW YORK--()--The nation’s largest suicide prevention organization in the United States, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, is hosting an audio briefing today to give guidance on how to report on suicide in a way that will not lead to contagion.

Mental illness is not a communicable disease, but there’s a strong body of evidence that suicide is still contagious. Publicity surrounding a suicide has been repeatedly and definitively linked to a subsequent increase in suicide, especially among young people. We must do more to prevent such tragic deaths through greater awareness of mental health, common risks and warning signs and effective interventions and treatments. Reporting responsibly on suicide has the potential to do good in terms of prevention.
