LINE Corporation and Intertrust Focus on Data Protection and Privacy for Their Third Security Summit – “Data Without Borders”

GDPR Launch and Personal Data Privacy Scandals Bring Attention to the Important Issues of Data Security and Privacy

TOKYO & SUNNYVALE, Calif.--()--LINE Corporation and Intertrust Technologies Corporation convened their third “LINE x Intertrust Security Summit” on May 17th, 2018. Held at LINE’s headquarters in Tokyo, Japan, an overflow audience of more than 150 industry professionals and academics gathered to hear an international group of experts discuss topics related to the summit’s theme: “Data Without Borders.”

The partners chose to hold the event right before the launch of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The event’s theme and content around the security and privacy of data in today’s data-driven business world was particularly relevant to the audience.

After kickoff speeches from Takeshi Nakayama, the CISO (chief information security officer) of LINE and Intertrust’s CEO Talal Shamoon, the audience heard a number of presentations on topics ranging from the practical uses of machine learning in cybersecurity applications to Internet governance to implications of GDPR for both corporate data governance and technology. Featured speakers included professors from the University of Tokyo, security technology professionals from both Silicon Valley and Japanese companies and Internet governance specialists from a former ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) board member, and an APNIC (Asia-Pacific Network Information Centre) executive.

“We live in a brave new world of amazing Internet services for consumers and enterprises alike,” said Talal G. Shamoon, Intertrust’s chief executive officer. “These services are built on advanced cloud-based data platforms and AI; the burden of data protection falls on the shoulders of the companies that build these services, which, as recently witnessed, has been neglected by some. Our goal at this summit was to highlight these issues and tease our possible solutions.”

“Data is an essential asset for corporations nowadays, and we cannot separate how data is used from user privacy,” said Takeshi Nakayama, CISO of LINE. “As an international data company, we understand that different countries and cultures have different expectations when it comes to privacy, and we always work to ensure our services respect those differences.”

Both companies are now planning for the fourth summit in the series to be held in the Fall of 2018.
