WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--After the March for Science and Earth Day, comes the March for the Ocean on June 9, to continue the fight to stop offshore oil drilling, end plastic pollution and protect our coastlines. On World Oceans Day weekend (June 9), thousands are expected to come to DC to participate in a flotilla on the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers, a march past the White House, and a rally, along with simultaneous events across the US and around the world.
On board to host the DC post-march rally are CNN and Travel Channel Environmental Journalists Philippe and Ashlan Cousteau and Danni Washington, TV Host of Xploration Nature Knows Best. Speakers will include National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence and Time magazine ‘Hero of the Planet’ Dr. Sylvia Earle, Bill McKibben, environmental author and founder of 350.org, Captain Paul Watson, founder of Sea Shepherd Society, Rear Admiral Ann Phillips (U.S. Navy Ret.) and many others.
Marching will be everyone from beach lovers to sailors, surfers, scuba divers, fishermen, scientists, deep-sea explorers, filmmakers, artists, students, environmentalists, climate experts, earth rights and social justice advocates, major aquariums, citizen scientists, families and businesses that depend on coastal tourism. They will march to raise awareness to the threats to our ocean and waterways and to demand corporate accountability for plastic pollution and funding for climate vulnerable communities.
March for the Ocean is supported by a broad range of more than 125 partner organizations including Sierra Club, Surfrider Foundation, Greenpeace, Blue Frontier Campaign, World Wildlife Fund, Oceana, The Ocean Conservancy, Plastic Pollution Coalition, the National Aquarium, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Pacific Coast Federation of Fishermen’s Associations, Native Organizers Alliance, Green Latinos, Professional Association of Dive Instructors and many more.
