Cockroach Labs Announces CockroachDB 2.0 -- Enabling Companies to Build Cloud Services That Can Start in a Single Datacenter and Expand to Span the Globe

Major Update Includes GDPR Compliance; JSON Support; Geo-Partitioning to Keep Data Close to the Customer; and Impressive Performance Benchmarks

NEW YORK--()--Cockroach Labs, the company behind CockroachDB, the SQL database for building global cloud services, announced the availability of CockroachDB 2.0. The new release includes geo-partitioning features that keep data close to the customer, performance benchmarks that prove it scales easily to handle 10X the maximum throughput achieved by competitor Amazon Aurora, and support for JSON. CockroachDB 2.0 is designed to work for companies at all scales: from startups to multinationals alike, with customers across the country or around the world. CockroachDB 2.0 offers the first database solution for building low-latency, global services capable of domiciling data next to the customer.

In order to improve efficiency, agility, and customer satisfaction, businesses are rapidly moving their workloads to the cloud. But traditional database technologies -- which weren’t built for the cloud -- can’t take advantage of what the cloud has to offer: virtually unlimited resources within a facility, across facilities, continents, and even cloud providers. Cockroach Labs released its flagship database in May of 2017 to address these issues. This release ups the ante by making it possible to achieve industry-leading performance at scale, with multi-active geo-replication for high availability, and is now capable of geo-partitioning to address data sovereignty compliance. Since the release of CockroachDB 1.0, the company has seen one million CockroachDB deployments and is now working with customers on four continents.

CockroachDB 2.0
CockroachDB 2.0 is cloud native and was built on a radically new infrastructure to simplify and automate the process of building multi-regional or global data architectures while giving developers a whole new level of flexibility.

New features & enhancements in CockroachDB 2.0:

  • GDPR Compliance: CockroachDB 2.0 enables organizations to simplify the building of multi-regional data clusters. A new feature called geo-partitioning allows developers to direct the movement of data at the database, table, and row level. This update keeps data close to customers and presents a foundational building block for helping companies comply with data regulations like the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
  • JSON Support: CockroachDB 2.0 includes native support for storing indexing, and querying JSON documents. JSON simplifies the programming model for developers who prefer to work with unstructured data but cannot tolerate the weak data integrity guarantees of NoSQL systems.
  • High-performance:
    • In a head-to-head test using the industry standard performance benchmark TPC-C, CockroachDB 2.0 scaled to 10x the maximum throughput achieved by Amazon Aurora.
    • CockroachDB. 2.0 processes 62% more transactions per second than version 1.1 released in October 2017. Additionally, 2.0 improved response time by 544% from version 1.1.
    • Read / write performance of CockroachDB 2.0 scales linearly, allowing it to grow far beyond any monolithic system like those offered by Oracle, Postgres, or MySQL.

CockroachDB Serving Growing Companies
Built to scale and run on any platform, CockroachDB serves fast-growing customers in technology, healthcare, gaming, and more. A few examples of customer deployments include:

  • Kindred Group is using CockroachDB to build a next generation online gaming platform that can serve a growing international base of customers and deliver them the optimum experience in terms of performance, availability, and data privacy.
    • “The CockroachDB 2.0 release sees the launch of the geo-partitioning feature we designed in partnership with Cockroach Labs. Once fully deployed it will enable us to domicile data more easily than we ever thought possible, significantly reducing latency and very importantly allowing us to keep our services compliant with the many different regulatory environments we operate in. CockroachDB is becoming the rock-solid foundation for our next generation of infrastructure,” said Marcus Smedman, CTO of Kindred Group.
  • Tierion, a blockchain company developing a “global proof engine,” stores its blockchain in CockroachDB.
  • Baidu, a top ten global internet company, uses CockroachDB to automate operations for applications that access 2TB of data with 50 million inserts a day.

“Our 2.0 release marks a turning point for CockroachDB as we transition into mature production deployments, solving some of the toughest problems in the industry. The companies we’re working with want solutions which help realize the inherent promise of the cloud, not ones which lock them into a vendor or maintain the status quo,” said Cockroach Labs’ Co-founder and CEO, Spencer Kimball.
