LEXINGTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--OmniGuide, Inc., the parent company of Domain Surgical, announced today the full commercial release of the FMsealer Laparoscopic Shears. FMsealer is the latest addition to its FMX Ferromagnetic Surgical System, and is designed to provide fast and reliable vessel sealing in a variety of laparoscopic procedures, all while maintaining OmniGuide’s commitment to patient safety.
The FMsealer Laparoscopic Shears are the only vessel sealing instrument based on ferromagnetic surgical energy. Ferromagnetic technology offers fast surgical transection and minimal thermal impact to surrounding tissue, without transmitting electrical current into the patient – making it possible and safe to operate near metal staples, clips, and instruments. Only the FMsealer offers distinct activation modes, each optimized for a different desired tissue interaction. The FMsealer Laparoscopic Shears are indicated for sealing vessels up to and including 7 mm in diameter, including lymphatics in both open and laparoscopic procedures.
Supporting the clinical efficacy of the FMsealer is a peer-reviewed article entitled “Validation of a Laparoscopic Ferromagnetic Technology-based Vessel Sealing Device and Comparative Study to Ultrasonic and Bipolar Laparoscopic Devices” which was published in 2017 in Surgical Laparoscopy, Endoscopy & Percutaneous Techniques. This study was part of the pre-clinical validation of the FMsealer Laparoscopic Shears, in which the authors rigorously tested the FMsealer compared to other leading vessel sealing instruments. The authors summarized the effectiveness of the FMsealer by saying “Ferromagnetic technology through a novel ferromagnetic alloy-coated heating element is a highly effective and efficient technology for thermal sealing and dividing blood vessels and vascularized tissue.” When describing the FMsealer’s thermal impact on surrounding tissue, the authors stated, “In histologic measurements of extent of thermal injury to adjacent tissue, the FMsealer showed less thermal damage to adjacent vessel walls compared with ultrasonic energy and equivalent to bipolar.”
A unique attribute common to all FMX surgical instruments, including the FMsealer, is the absence of electrical current transmitting through the patient. The authors of the study described above stated, “There is no electrical energy conducted to the patient… It can be expected to work across staple lines or in the vicinity of other metallic objects such as clips, similar to that of ultrasonic technologies but unlike bipolar technologies.”
“The FMsealer Laparoscopic Shears offers intuitive plug-and-play capabilities with our award-winning FMX Ferromagnetic Surgical System; expanding the utility of our electrically silent precision-based surgical platform,” said OmniGuide, Inc.’s CEO John Buhler. “The FMsealer provides surgeons with an optimal combination of reliability, efficiency, customization, and safety in a variety of laparoscopic procedures, without passing potentially dangerous electrical current through the patient.”
