MISSION VIEJO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Mission Hospital announced today that it has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Heart Check Mark for Advanced Certification for Comprehensive Stroke Centers. This designation was awarded to Mission Hospital for its specific abilities to receive and treat complex stroke patients as well as meet additional requirements, including those related to advanced imaging capabilities, 24/7 availability of specialized treatments, and providing staff with the unique education and competencies to care for complex stroke patients.
The certification is provided through a partnership between the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association and The Joint Commission, the nation's oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in health care.

The institute’s multidisciplinary stroke team provides the highest quality care for the most complex stroke cases through the use of state-of-the-art technology, the newest interventional and surgical techniques, and innovative rehabilitation methods. In 2017, the MNI team cared for 367 stroke patients and provided lifesaving treatment for 142 eligible patients. Time is brain and when a stroke happens, seconds count. The national goal to receive a clot-busting medication to stop a stroke is 60 minutes and Mission Hospital was able to do it in an average of 46 minutes.
With this certification, Mission Hospital joins an elite group of health care organizations, including Hoag, St. Jude Medical Center and St. Joseph Hospital that are focused on highly-specialized stroke care. To be eligible, hospitals must demonstrate compliance with stroke-related standards as a Primary Stroke Center and meet additional requirements, including those related to advanced imaging capabilities, 24/7 availability of specialized treatments, and to provide staff with the unique education and competencies to care for complex stroke patients.
Established in 2012, Advanced Certification for Comprehensive Stroke Centers is awarded for a two-year period to Joint Commission-accredited acute care hospitals.
