Cumulus Networks Announces Early Access of Cumulus Linux for Voyager with ADVA

Vodafone, NYSERNet, Internet2, GRnet and CESNET will be first to trial Voyager, expanding their coverage areas through scalable, flexible optical transport networks

SAN DIEGO, Calif.--()--OFC, The Optical Networking and Communication Conference & ExhibitionCumulus Networks, the leaders in building open, modern, and scalable networks, announced at OFC, The Optical Networking and Communication Conference & Exhibition today that Cumulus Linux is now available for early access on Voyager through partner ADVA, and it will be generally available in mid-June. This announcement builds on Cumulus Networks’ collaboration through the Telecom Infra Project (TIP) on Voyager, announced in November at TIP Summit. Trials of Cumulus Linux for Voyager will start with customers including Vodafone; NYSERNet and Internet2, non-profit research and education networks in the U.S.; GRnet, a national research and education network in Greece; and CESNET, developer and operator of national e-infrastructure for science, research, development and education in Czech Republic.

Voyager, which Facebook contributed to TIP, is the industry’s first open packet-optical transport system, combining dense wavelength multiplexing (DWDM) technology with switching and routing functionality. It addresses operator needs for scalable, cost-effective backhaul infrastructure in support of increasing global internet usage and bandwidth-intensive applications like video, virtual reality, scientific research, and machine learning. Cumulus provides interfaces for programmability, automation and cost-efficiency as well as offers a L2/L3 stack and an open Linux model that gives operators deep, fabric-wide visibility. In the marriage of IP and Optical, Cumulus Linux’s routing protocol stack, VXLAN, and EVPN help customers build cost-effective, high-performance long haul systems.

Because Voyager solves challenges in metro and long-haul fiber optic transport networks, the collaboration opens up a market for Cumulus outside of just the data center to that of Data Center Interconnect (DCI). More than 1,000 customers, including over a third of the Fortune 50, use Cumulus Networks technology to enable web-scale networking in their data centers.

Supporting quotes:

  • “We’ve been thrilled to see so much interest from top service providers from around the world in open alternatives to expensive, inflexible proprietary solutions. This is the next frontier of open networking. We’re proud to be part of the community coming together to help customers meet the challenges facing their networks now and prepare them for the future.” -- Josh Leslie, CEO, Cumulus Networks
  • "We've played an intrinsic role in the development of the Voyager platform since day one. We're continuously working with our partners to evolve the solution to meet the specific networking needs of multiple service providers and enterprises. What Cumulus Networks is announcing today is the latest step on this journey, and we're excited to be helping roll it out." -- Niall Robinson, VP of global business development, ADVA
  • "We're interested in finding ways to drive down the cost per bit across our backbone. In working with our colleagues at the New York State Education and Research Network (NYSERNet), we see promise in disaggregated solutions like Voyager to help us get there in a flexible and scalable way." -- John Moore, AVP for Research and Infrastructure Strategy, Internet2
  • “We are excited to have so much bandwidth potential in such a compact form factor, coupled with the capabilities of Cumulus Linux. We anticipate significant growth in research traffic, and our partnerships with Cumulus and ADVA, along with our participation in TIP, will help us unlock the potential of our network to handle those demands.” -- Bill Owens, CTO of NYSERNet
