CUPERTINO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--TRENDFOCUS has released its latest NAND/SSD Quarterly Update and Long-Term Forecast. In CQ4 ’17, both client and enterprise PCIe SSDs showed unit growth, with enterprise PCIe posting a strong 48% increase Q-Q. Usable capacity for SSDs also increased to 16.68 exabytes in the quarter.
The total enterprise SSD market increased 3.5% Q-Q to nearly 6 million units. Although both SATA and SAS units fell from the prior quarter, the large increase in PCIe offset the decline of the other two interfaces. Enterprise PCIe shipments in CQ4 ‘17 totaled 2.4 exabytes, with both metrics outpacing SAS. SATA SSDs maintained the highest storage capacity shipped with 3.274 exabytes, respectively despite posting the highest sequential decline in the enterprise segment. SAS units fell only a slight 1.4% but sequential capacity shipped inched up to 1.6 exabytes.
Client SSD shipments grew 6.5% Q-Q with capacity shipped totaling 9.5 exabytes. The increase reflected a combination of healthier NAND supply as well as eroding SSD prices. Client Drive Form Factor (DFF) units increased 12.9% sequentially but modules still dominated the client space.
NAND bit shipments increased nearly 8% Q-Q, and for the year NAND shipments rose 39%. For the quarter, 3D NAND bits captured over 60% of the total, as all NAND suppliers topped 50% 3D bit output. NAND shipped to SSDs and phones accounted for almost 80% of the market in CQ4 ’17.
