NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts (NYCDA) today proudly announced the introduction of its new two-year AOS degree in musical theater performance. Designed to enable students to define their unique brand and transform into acting professionals, NYCDA’s musical theater program course work and productions will place an emphasis on acting and training students to be storytellers through dance and song.
Starting in fall of 2018, NYCDA’s new curriculum will build the skills necessary for musical theater performers, and the business knowledge required of a working professional. Rigorous courses in acting, voice, dance, and theater business will be taught to give students the complete education they need to compete for work in the industry.
“The musical theater landscape is changing rapidly and with that comes new, exciting opportunities for careers in the industry. We are thrilled to develop a program that offers students a personalized approach to training that places acting at the core to best prepare them for an artistic career on the stage and beyond,” said Richard Omar, president and artistic director at The New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts. “At the Conservatory, we believe students bring their commitment, curiosity and courage and we bring our experience, intuition and compassion, enabling students to turn their dreams into action. We continue this mission with our new musical theater program.”
Taught in small classroom formats, the program will be shaped by its working actor instructors and student community to deliver a dynamic learning experience. In the musical theater program’s first year, students focus on building each of the skills required of a musical theater performer. In the second year, students refine their acting, singing, dance, audition skills, and business knowledge, as well as on-camera musical performance. Students participate in performance opportunities every semester with full production in a New York theater venue at the end of the second year.
The program will be held at The New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts campus in the flatiron district of New York City. Continuing NYCDA’s tradition of working faculty, classes will be taught by actors, directors and teaching artists focused on mentoring and developing students’ skills with individualized instruction.
