NCPERS Unveils Educational Agenda for 2018

At Least 18 In-Person Meetings and Webinars on Tap for Public Pension Community

WASHINGTON--()--The National Conference on Public Employee Retirement Systems has announced its slate of member education programs for 2018, underscoring its commitment to creating frequent learning opportunities that foster excellence in public pension systems.

“We will be hosting eight in-person meetings, as well as at least 10 webinars on urgent topics, to ensure that robust and cutting-edge educational opportunities are available to the public pension community,” said Hank H. Kim, executive director and counsel for NCPERS. “Along with advocacy and research, education is a cornerstone of the NCPERS mission.”

The program year kicks off in January, when NCPERS tees up policy issues facing public pensions at its 2018 Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C. Additional conferences throughout the year touch on key topics, from pension funding to trustee education, to fiduciary standards to special issues facing chief investment officers and public safety workers. NCPERS’ flagship conference, the Annual Conference & Exhibition (ACE), will be held in New York in May.

“Members have consistently told us they want specialized training programs in conjunction with broader conferences, and we have delivered once again,” said Cassandra Smoot, NCPERS’ senior director of operations, noting that five of the conferences are clustered over three time frames. She noted that the newest offering, the NCPERS Accredited Fiduciary Program (NAF), is offered twice a year. Since NAF’s launch in 2015, 120 pension fiduciaries have undergone the training, and 47 have successfully completed the program and earned their Accredited Fiduciary designation.

In addition, Smoot noted, more than 400 participants took part in the 10 webinars NCPERS hosted in 2017, on topics that included federal and state legislative developments, the valuation of pension assets, the NCPERS Code of Conduct, and various research initiatives.

A complete list of currently scheduled in-person conferences for 2018 follows:

Registration information and other details on the programs become available at www.ncpers.org approximately three months before the program date. Media participation in the conference may be granted on a case-by-case basis.
