NEWTOWN, Conn.--()--The Emmy-nominated series Rough Cut returns for Season 8 with a new host Tom McLaughlin and a new partner in Fine Woodworking Magazine. Fine Woodworking, with its 1.8 million readers, is the most trusted and highest quality woodworking resource in the country. In this new season, they join forces with both WGBH, the largest producer of public television content, and talented Master woodworker and teacher Tom McLaughlin, to launch an all-new Rough Cut with Fine Woodworking.

In each half-hour episode, unusual design inspiration is turned into easy-to-follow projects for woodworkers at every skill level. Host Tom McLaughlin teaches the latest wood crafting techniques, as well as tips and instruction for how to create projects that can be passed down for generations. “What I like most about fine woodworking is the power to say something beautiful without words,” says host Tom McLaughlin. Tom will be joined by expert guests, including frequent contributors to Fine Woodworking, who will help demonstrate a particular technique. Each project will be created out of a beautiful hardwood garnered from the woods of New England.

Fine Woodworking is the most-trusted brand in woodworking,” says Rough Cut Executive Producer Laurie Donnelly. “We are thrilled with this exciting partnership which carves out a new legacy on public television.” Renee Jordan, Publisher at Fine Woodworking Magazine says, “With over 40 years of woodworking inspiration and instruction, we are excited to be working with both Tom and WGBH to bring favorite projects for every skill level to our audiences. We also look forward to continuing in WGBH’s pioneering tradition of how-to programming.”

Tom McKenna, Editorial Director for Fine Woodworking adds, “Tom McLaughlin has a calm expertise that inspires woodworkers to pick up their tools and start working. His ability to connect to people is genuine, and his teaching skills are topnotch.”

Projects this season will include: A Craftsman-style dining chair in white oak; a Shaker-style hall table in cherry; a hanging bow front cabinet in American ash; an Adirondack-inspired lawn chair in cypress; a tilt-top round breakfast table in curly maple; a Shaker blanket chest with drawer in cherry; a live-edge coffee table made from New England walnut, and much more.

Tom McLaughlin has been making and designing commissioned custom furniture since 1990. After years of higher education in his twenties, he decided to pursue his love for fine furniture making full-time. His training launched forward when he entered a rare apprenticeship with master craftsman P.A. “Pug” Moore in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Tom remained close to Pug, even after branching out on his own, which included returning to his native New England roots where he’s been making fine furniture ever since.

Even though Rough Cut will be seen by many people across the country, I imagine myself speaking to each viewer alone, sharing my passion for woodworking - the same way my mentor, P.A. “Pug” Moore passed along to me, many years ago.”
