WEST WARWICK, R.I.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--AstroNova, Inc. (NASDAQ: ALOT) today announced with sadness the death of Chairman of the Board Hermann Viets, Ph.D., who passed away in his sleep on Saturday, September 30 at the age of 74. Dr. Viets was appointed to the board in 1988 and elected chairman in 2012.
“Hermann made an immense contribution to AstroNova, both in terms of his corporate governance expertise and his background as an aerospace engineer,” said President and CEO Gregory A. Woods. “Over his 29 years as a member of the board, and more than five years as chairman, he brought unique vision, insight and leadership to the Company. He was generous with both his time and his expertise, and he will be deeply missed.”
From 1991 until his retirement in 2015, Dr. Viets served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE). In his retirement, he continued to serve MSOE as a member of the Board of Regents.
In 1997, Dr. Viets was named “Engineer of the Year” by Engineers & Scientists of Milwaukee Inc. He also received the 2008 World Citizen Award from the International Institute of Wisconsin and the 2014 Bolger Award from the Clinical and Translational Science Institute of southeast Wisconsin. He held seven U.S. patents.
Dr. Viets received a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering, and both a Master of Science and Ph.D. in Astronautics, all from Polytechnic University in New York City and Farmingdale, Long Island. He was a visiting scientist, aerospace engineer and research group leader for Wright Patterson Air Force Base Aerospace Research Laboratories in Dayton, Ohio; lecturer at the Von Karman Institute in Brussels, Belgium; and a research associate at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, N.Y. His other academic experience included serving as dean of engineering at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston; associate dean for research and professor at West Virginia University, Morgantown; and professor of engineering at Wright State University, Dayton, Ohio.
Dr. Viets is survived by his wife Pam, their children Deane (Isabella), Hans (Lauren), Danielle (Michael) Leighton, Hillary (Andy) Bowser, and several grandchildren.
