BOXBOROUGH, Mass.--()--The Mass Technology Leadership Council has named Sterilis LLC. the winner of the “Technology for a Better Tomorrow” award at the 20th annual MassTLC Leadership Awards Gala. Bob Winskowicz, chief executive officer of Sterilis, accepted the award on behalf of the company during the Awards Gala at Boston’s Seaport World Trade Center on September 14.

Sterilis is an innovator in helping healthcare and public health facilities cost effectively remediate and safely dispose of regulated medical waste (RMW). Since launching in February, Sterilis’ systems have been adopted by more than 100 health facilities including dialysis clinics, needle exchange and drop off centers, outpatient surgical centers, hospitals, and assisted living centers.

The event celebrated Massachusetts’ spirit of innovation, bringing together hundreds of the region's most influential executives, community leaders, business luminaries and media. Winners were selected from hundreds of nominations, and evaluated by panels comprising dozens of executives, investors, analysts, media and thought leaders.

“Sterilis is dedicated to providing a solution for health organizations and communities to properly and safely dispose of infectious medical waste as close to the point of generation as possible,” said Bob Winskowicz, chief executive officer of Sterilis. “Winning this prestigious award is a major validation for Sterilis. With the Sterilis device, we’re clearly making our communities, healthcare and public health facilities across the country less dangerous. This recognition by the MassTLC helps Sterilis take a major step forward in educating the public about how innovation can be applied to this escalating global health issue.”

The patented Sterilis device uses steam sterilization and grinding technology to transform medical waste into a harmless confetti-like material that can be disposed of in the general waste stream. The Sterilis method of waste disposal reduces toxic air pollution created when RMW is incinerated, which is one of the leading causes of greenhouse gas emissions. The device requires no fixtures or plumbing and can be plugged into a standard electrical outlet.

“I am still humbled after 20 years of recognizing the leaders and innovators that make up the Massachusetts tech sector,” said MassTLC CEO Tom Hopcroft. “We celebrate the dedication and accomplishments of Sterilis as a model for those who follow in their footsteps. The importance of these contributions cannot be overstated as they are shaping our future in real time.”

Sterilis was among four other industry disruptors all working to make a significant impact in their respective fields by utilizing impressive, next-generation technology. In the “Technology for a Better Tomorrow” category, the contenders included IBM Watson, Toast, Neuromotion and WeSpire. To view all the winners of this year’s MassTLC Awards, please visit here.
