South Dakota Vet Elected National Vice Commander of The American Legion

RENO, Nev.--()--A career South Dakota National Guard veteran and member of American Legion Post 17 in Watertown, S.D. was elected national vice commander of the two-million member veteran’s organization during its national convention in Reno, Nev., today.

Byron Callies served in the National Guard for 41 years and as department (state) commander of the South Dakota American Legion from 2012 to 2013. His civilian working career of 47 years was spent in the energy industry, starting off as an electrician for an investor-owned electric utility and culminating as supervisor-Energy Management and Marketing for the Department of Energy, Western Area Power Administration. His hobbies include model railroad building, geocaching, and remodeling houses. He is married to the former Kaelyn Hackett of Madison, S.D., and the couple have three grown children, 12 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Callies is one of 12 national officers in The American Legion.
