ADTRAN Reshapes the Service Edge with Broadband Subscriber Management Suite

ADTRAN eliminates the need for legacy BNGs as the software defined network evolves

HUNTSVILLE, Ala.--()--ADTRAN®, Inc., (NASDAQ:ADTN), a leading provider of next-generation open networking solutions, today announced the Mosaic Broadband Subscriber Management Suite as part of its Software Defined Service Edge (SD-Service Edge) portfolio. ADTRAN’s Mosaic Broadband Subscriber Management Suite leverages software to establish and manage subscriber sessions, serving as the entry point to the access network from the ISP or network provider edge. This software suite addresses the broadband access subscriber management feature sets that have historically been served by large monolithic broadband network gateway (BNG) routers. Eliminating these legacy BNG devices from the network will enable operators reduce upfront capital and ongoing operational costs by an order of magnitude.

“ADTRAN’s SD-Service Edge provides multi-terabit connectivity with advanced QoS and real-time session management for tens of thousands of users to address the scale requirements of the most demanding next-generation PON networks,” said Chris Thompson, director of Mosaic software and solutions portfolio for ADTRAN. “The benefit to the service provider is unmatched scale, automation, network simplification and lower operational cost as network operators look to expand the scale and improve the agility of their fiber access networks.”

The ADTRAN Broadband Subscriber Management Suite provides the highest scale integrated subscriber management in the market for Next Gen PON systems. The combined solution components work in concert to provide advanced traffic management, policy and session control and subscriber gateway functions using a modular, software driven approach and a success-based investment model. Within the ADTRAN Broadband Subscriber Management Suite the following software components are available:

  • Mosaic Virtual Subscriber Session Manager (Mosaic vSSM)
    • Delivers virtualized control and network management functions.
  • Mosaic OS Feature Packs:
    • Advanced QoS Module – Provides advanced H-QoS integrated with next generation OLTs with non-blocking uplinks
    • Layer 3 Module – Leverages modern, high-density Nx100G aggregation switches with hardware-based L3 forwarding, CALEA and subscriber analytics capability

“The rise of Software Defined Networking (SDN) continues to push modern connectivity towards a more open, programmable and scalable software-based infrastructure,” said Aberdeen Research Director Jim Rapoza. “Our research has shown steady growth in the adoption of SDN, and we’ve seen that, when deployed on the network edge, it provides improved performance, reduced downtime and increased efficiencies.”

This next-generation architecture lays the foundation for future SDN centric networks, blending SDN and classical models, and provides a core component in customer self-service models. Advancements in programmable silicon and modern software architectures such as ADTRAN Mosaic, that distributes the key functions to a combination of highly programmable white box hardware and virtualized network functions, make this possible. For ADTRAN, this innovative solution capitalizes on the shift towards modern network architectures, and it expands its software and managed services portfolio spanning from Cloud Edge to Subscriber Edge.
