BOCA RATON, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--CoverMyMeds, a leader in electronic prior authorization (ePA) solutions, and Modernizing Medicine, the specialty-specific health IT leader, today announced an agreement to bring electronic prior authorization (ePA) functionality to the over 7,500 providers using EMA™, the award winning electronic health record (EHR) system in Modernizing Medicine’s suite of services.
Prior authorization (PA) is the formulary management process of requiring pre-approval for certain prescribed medications that impacts more than 185 million prescriptions each year[1]. Of those, 75 million prescriptions are abandoned, in part due to the burdensome PA process. Historically, PA requests have been completed through paper forms, faxes and phone calls among medical practices, pharmacies and insurance companies. Electronic prior authorization transforms the PA workflow into an electronic process that can minimize prescription abandonment and administrative waste.
Modernizing Medicine is the latest EHR vendor to work with CoverMyMeds for electronic prior authorization and, according to the ePA National Adoption Scorecard, joins 73 percent of EHR and E-Prescribing vendors representing the majority of the market share who are currently committed to implementing ePA.
“Modernizing Medicine has been an innovator in delivering specialty-specific solutions, and CoverMyMeds is thrilled to work together toward serving their providers and helping patients receive the medications they need to live healthy lives,” explains Ryan Tarzy, Director of the Incubation Studio at CoverMyMeds.
Modernizing Medicine’s iPad and cloud based EHR system, EMA, is the cornerstone of a specialty-specific, comprehensive suite of products and services that also includes Practice Management, Revenue Cycle Management, Analytics and more. In 2017, EMA was ranked #1 by Black Book in dermatology, ophthalmology, plastic and cosmetic surgery, otolaryngology and urology. In addition, EMA ranked as the #2 pain management EHR system and #3 orthopedics EHR system.
“As a practicing physician, I understand the time consuming and expensive frustration of the back and forth pre-approval process for certain medications,” states Michael Sherling, MD, MBA, chief medical officer and co-founder of Modernizing Medicine. “Streamlining prior authorizations with CoverMyMeds will help solve a pain point for providers and their patients – patients should receive the right medications in a timely manner, and physicians and their staff can save valuable time.”
