Based on the derivative type, the report categorizes the global butadiene and its derivatives market into the following segments:
- Styrene butadiene rubber (SBR)
- Polybutadiene rubber (PBR)
- Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) resins
- Styrene-butadiene (SB) latex
- Others
The top three revenue-generating derivative segments in the global butadiene and its derivatives market are discussed below:
Styrene butadiene rubber (SBR)
SBR is a synthetic rubber formed by the copolymerization of styrene and butadiene in the ratio of 3:1 by weight. It is manufactured by either the emulsion process to get emulsion-polymerized SBR (E-SBR) or the solution process to get solution-polymerized SBR (S-SBR).
“Styrene butadiene occupied a majority 30% share of the market in 2016 and is expected to hold its dominance through the forecast period. The market segment is expected to grow at a steady rate owing to the high demand for these products from the tire manufacturing industry,” says Ajay Adikari, a lead analyst at Technavio for plastics, polymers, and elastomers research.
Polybutadiene rubber (PBR)
Polybutadiene rubber is estimated to reach 4.56 million metric tons by 2021, accounting for 29% of the overall market shares. PBR is a polymerization form of the butadiene in a solution. It is synthesized using any of the transition metal such as neodymium, nickel, cobalt, titanium, and lithium.
The main application of PBR is in both tread and sidewall of tires, conveyor belts, driving belts, hoses, asbestos rubber goods, footwear, cable insulation, and golf balls. Countries such as China, the US, Germany, France, and the UK are the key consumers of the product.
Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) resins
“Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene resins are expected to exhibit a CAGR of close to 6% over the forecast period, establishing itself as the fastest-growing market segment. ABS is a copolymer of chemicals like acrylonitrile, butadiene, and styrene, which has major applications in the injection molding and extrusions,” says Ajay.
ABS resins are also used in lightweight electrical resistance products, drain waste vent pipe systems, golf club heads, automotive components, small kitchen appliances, household and consumer goods, and industrial appliances.
