SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Ebates, a leader and pioneer in cash back shopping and subsidiary of the global internet services company Rakuten, today announced the results of its 2017 Wedding Survey. The national survey, which was conducted online by Propeller Insights on behalf of Ebates and fielded among 1,008 adults, revealed that when it comes to finding the perfect engagement ring, 49 percent of American women said they’d like to be surprised.
Will you marry me?
While almost half of Americans say that they want a ring to surprise and delight them, 85 percent admit that they would say “yes” even if they hated the ring their partner used to propose. This may explain why 72 percent say that it’s ok to upgrade to a better ring once one is already married.
Additionally, 42 percent of Americans reveal that they would wear their dream ring even if it had been previously worn—and that marriage ended in divorce.
Some Americans also admit that they’d like to pick the ring out themselves (15 percent), and more than a quarter would choose to go shopping with their partner and provide feedback (28 percent).
If you’re planning to give your loved one an heirloom ring, think again—only 7 percent say that would be their ring of choice.
With this ring, I thee wed
When it comes to how much Americans are planning on spending on their ring, it looks like the old adage of spending 2-3 months’ salary still holds true. Almost half of American men and women expect to spend between $1,000-$5,000 on an engagement ring (44 percent for women and 45 percent for men).
The Best and the Worst of Wedding Gifts
If a wedding gift looks familiar, it might be—19 percent of Americans admit that they think it’s ok to re-gift something as a wedding gift and that they’ve done it before. For those who are purchasing a new gift, 43 percent of Americans say they’d spend between $50-$100 on wedding gifts.
Americans reveal that the worst gift to give to a couple is art (30 percent) followed by a homemade gift (28 percent).
What do Americans think are the best gifts to get newlyweds? Not surprisingly, more than half say money (56 percent) or a gift card (46 percent), followed by:
- Kitchen supplies and gadgets—34 percent
- Home furnishings—27 percent
- Appliances—22 percent
- Experience or a trip—21 percent
