SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Scality, world leader in object and cloud storage, announced tremendous traction for its open source S3 Server and the launch of its self-certification portal for applications. These allow the hundreds of S3 compatible applications to be qualified and validated for private and hybrid cloud deployments with Scality.
Since its launch in June 2016, the open-source S3 Server has seen week over week increasing downloads on Docker. In the last week of October alone, the Scality S3 Server had 238 stars on GitHub and 2000 Docker pulls of its ready-to-install container. Deployed as a Docker container, the S3 Server can be easily deployed in a matter of minutes, whether on a laptop or on a storage server.
The S3 Server is an open community project and encourages participation by developers. More than 50 community contributions have been made so far on GitHub and the S3 Server Hackathons have been fun forums to code and network together. Scality recently organized a Hackathon which took place at the Holberton School, a very innovative full stack software engineering school based in San Francisco. This recent Hackathon, organized together with Seagate, hosted eight competing teams working through the weekend and resulted in some interesting projects, for example:
- Overcoming the 1 MB barrier on Kinetic drives
- Building a relational database on an immutable object store
- A new GUI for AWS S3 API with authentication from GitHub, Gmail and Facebook
- How to automatically benchmark hardware platforms running S3 Server
Scality has also launched a self-certification portal for any S3 application to certify on Scality storage – available at s3certification.scality.com. The certification is valid for both the open-source S3 Server and the scale-out Scality RING. The self-certification is a seven step automatically guided process, allowing enterprise software vendors, or developers, to check full compatibility and performance of their S3 API implementation.
“Enterprise want to buy a certified solution, not just technologies that they have to integrate,” said Paul Turner, CMO of Scality. “The self-certification program broadens the ecosystem of applications for Scality and allows customers to deploy those applications with confidence.”
Applications that are currently certified with Scality S3 API include Aspera, Commvault Simpana, CTERA, Komprise, NetApp Altavault, OpenText, Rubrik, Seven-10, Syncplicity, SME, QStar and Veritas NetBackup and Enterprise Vault.
“Komprise has partnered with Scality to enable companies to consolidate their storage tiers and reduce their storage TCO,” said Krishna Subramanian, COO at Komprise.” To combine Komprise’s data insight and management automation with Scality’s scale-out object storage, we leveraged Scality’s S3 self-certification program. We were very pleasantly surprised with the level of automation and documentation of the program, which allowed us to complete the S3-based integration with the Scality RING in just a few weeks.”
