WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jim Denault, ASC, cinematographer; Alec Jarnagin, SOC, camera operator; Bruce MacCallum, SOC, camera operator; and David J. Thompson, SOC, camera operator will appear together at NAB Show New York to discuss the role camera operators play in creating compelling stories and what it takes to get “the shot.” The session will take place Thursday, November 10, 10:00 a.m. at the Javits Convention Center in New York City.
Moderated by filmmaker and technician Fergus Burnett, the keynote session, titled “The Rock Stars of the Set,” will feature artists who captured some of the industry’s biggest award-winning movies and television shows, such as “Silver Linings Playbook,” “The Departed,” “Silicon Valley,” and “Gossip Girl.” These industry veterans will share their most memorable shots and the gear and techniques used to capture pyrotechnic, underwater and nuanced close-up footage. Additionally, the panelists will discuss the best ways to work side-by-side with directors of photography and other partners on-set, as well as the production pitfalls they learned to avoid.
“The professionals behind the camera can make all the difference between an award-winning shot and what could have been,” said Chris Brown, NAB executive vice president, Conventions and Business Operations. “We’re looking forward to hosting four luminaries at the top of their game as they share their tips, tricks, and innovations behind how they make some of the most beloved characters on both the big and small screens come to life.”
“I think digital cinematography has been a big disruption to the entire process on set, not just in terms of the way the image formed by a lens is written to a medium, but in the way we as cinematographers and operators can see and control the image during production,” said Jim Denault.
Denault launched his career by shooting independent features, such as “Boys Don’t Cry,” “Maria Full of Grace,” and “The Believer.” Since then, Denault has gone on to photograph a wide range of film and television genres. Among Denault’s feature film credits are collaborations with director Jay Roach, including “All the Way,” “Trumbo,” “The Campaign,” “Game Change,” and “Recount.” Recent works include “Bad Moms” and “Pitch Perfect 2.” He has been nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Cinematography for “Nadja” and an Emmy for Outstanding Cinematography for “Carnivàle” and the movie “Game Change” in 2012.
With more than 18 years of experience in photography, Jarnagin has worked on a variety of feature films and television shows, such as “Gossip Girl,” “30 Rock,” “Rescue Me,” “Canterbury’s Law,” “Sex and the City,” “Third Watch,” and “Chappelle’s Show.” As a director of photography, Jarnagin photographed projects for MTV, CNN, The History Channel, National Geographic and Discovery Channel.
MacCallum has over 40 years of experience as a camera operator working with directors including Peter Weir (“Witness”), Jonathan Demme (“Silence of the Lambs”), Nora Ephron (“Heartburn”), and Marty Scorcese (“New York Stories”). In 2013, MacCallum received The Society of Camera Operators' Lifetime Achievement Award. His recent credits include “The Night of,” “The Intern,” “Black Box,” “The Other Woman,” and “Annie.”
“Our job as the Camera Operator is to deliver the best possible frames for the director and cinematographer,” said Dave Thompson. “Movies for an audience are true immersion. If you forget about how it was made and connect with a story or character, we have all done our jobs.”
Thompson has extensive credits in both feature film and television as a camera operator and a Steadicam operator. Thompson’s partial credits include top projects such as: “The Hunger Games,” “Insurgent,” “Divergent,” “American Hustle,” “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty,” “Silver Linings Playbook,” “Boardwalk Empire,” “Without a Trace,” and “The Wire.”
