SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--eBay Motors (www.eBay.com/Motors), one of the world’s largest online marketplaces, today announced the results of its Holiday Automotive Gifting Survey.1 The findings show that nearly one-third of Americans have either gifted a vehicle to themselves or to someone else in celebration, or in recognition of, a major life milestone, including the holidays. Additionally, the survey revealed different vehicle gifting preferences and behaviors across three generations: Millennials, Gen-xers, and Baby Boomers.2
Exploring consumer intent, the survey further illustrates what motivations drive shopping behavior when it comes to gifting vehicles. Whether consumers are buying that special someone a new ride, or self-gifting a dream car that Santa never managed to cross off the list, eBay Motors is the destination for great value and unmatched selection. eBay Motors has new, used, rare, luxury, and even celebrity-owned inventory of vehicles and parts and accessories.
“At eBay, consumer choice and selection are among our top priorities,” said Jay Hanson, eBay’s Vice President of North America, Merchandising of Hard Goods. “Having insight into consumers’ preferences and shopping behaviors, including what type of vehicle they’d like to gift themselves or someone else during the holidays, is important for us to leverage as we continue to evolve the online automotive retail experience.”
No Scrooges, here! Millennials are the most generous when it comes to vehicle gifting…
According to the study from eBay Motors, Millennials have a higher than average percentage of respondents who have purchased a vehicle as a gift in celebration, or in recognition, of a major life milestone or for the holidays. Among the Millennial respondents who have gifted a vehicle, more than two-thirds (75 percent) are in their late twenties to early thirties3.
Additionally, Millennials have the highest percentage of people who are considering buying someone a vehicle as a holiday gift this year. In terms of recipients, more Millennial wives, one-in-four, have gifted vehicles to their husbands for the holidays or to celebrate a major life milestone.
The biggest motivators for Millennials who purchased a vehicle as a gift was to either “treat themselves” or someone else because it was a “dream car” that person always wanted.
We made a list. We checked it twice. We found Ford, Nissan and Toyota are nice…
Across the three generations the favorite brands include:
- Ford is the most considered brand among Millennials
- Nissan is the most considered brand among Gen-Xers
- Toyota is the most considered brand among Baby Boomers

As it relates to vehicles consumers want to receive as a holiday gift, the Ford Mustang is the most wanted dream car across all three generations.
