Technavio Says the Global Graphene Market is Set to Grow at 39% CAGR: China is the Largest Graphite Producer Globally

LONDON--()--Technavio analysts forecast the global graphene market to grow at a CAGR of close to 39% during the forecast period, according to their latest report.

The research study covers the present scenario and growth prospects of the global graphene market for 2016-2020. To determine the market size, the report considered the revenue generated through sales of graphene products for applications such as transportation, infrastructural development, and others (electronics applications and solar energy applications).

Geographically, APAC accounted for the largest share of the market in 2015. APAC is the largest graphite producer globally with China being the major market. China is also the largest graphite producer globally. The graphene market in China was USD 1.4 million in 2014, reaching USD 6.1 million in 2015. The growth of the Chinese market was driven by the adoption of graphene in different industrial applications, including anticorrosive coating, touchscreens, and lithium-ion batteries.

Technavio chemicals and materials research analysts highlight the following three factors that are contributing to the growth of the global graphene market:

  • Rising number of patents
  • Distinct properties
  • Increasing R&D investments

Rising number of patents

The global graphene market is attracting investments from private organizations, such as IBM and Nokia, as well as public institutions, such as the European Commission. This intern is enhancing scientific knowledge, accompanied by an increase in the number of patent applications and publications.

“The peak year for patents and publications was 2014. Since various organizations are working at a fast pace on graphene-based researches, there will be a rise in the number of patents filing and will trigger the demand for graphene,” says Ajay Adikhari, a lead analyst at Technavio for research on metals and minerals.

Samsung was the leading applicant in 2014 for graphene followed by Ocean’s King Lighting. Ocean’s King Lighting was at a ninth place in 2013. More than 25,000 patents were published between 2005 and 2014 equating for more than 13,000 patent families (including grant stage, application stage, and granted patents). Every patent family includes one or more published patents that originate from a single original application.

Distinct properties

Graphene has excellent mechanical, electronic, and chemical properties. It is approximately 100 times stronger than steel and can move electrons 200 times faster as compared with silicon. Graphene requires less light energy for electron excitation as it has overlapped electron layers. It is strong, thin, and can easily bend without breaking, which makes it a material of choice for bendable electronics.

“Graphene can be considered as an alternative to indium tin oxide used in plasma televisions and phones. It has excellent properties that are attracting its use in various applications listed below,” says Ajay.

Some of the graphene properties, applications, and end-users are listed below:

Properties   Application   Industries
Mechanical   Flexible electronics, conductive inks, and composite materials   Aircraft, automotive, and electronics
Electronic properties   Integrated circuits, telecommunications, and transistors   Electronics and telecommunications
Chemical properties   Composite materials, distillation, and thermal management   Electronics and photonics
Thermal properties   Composite materials and thermal management in electronics and photonics   Electronics and photonics

Increasing R&D investments

Graphene has attracted an investment of USD 2.5 billion in R&D. Public as well as the private institutions are continuously investing in graphene R&D. For instance, the UK government invested USD 80.5 million in the National Graphene Institute in Manchester, UK opened in 2015. The institute is focused on graphene research. In addition, the European Union is funding USD 1.11 billion, over a span of 10 years since 2011, in the Graphene Flagship program intended to understand graphene and its uses. The program involves approximately 74 organizations from 17 countries intended to turn scientific research into marketable products. South Korea also invested USD 350 million in the commercialization of graphene.

In December 2015, Graphene 3D Lab entered into a loyalty agreement with a Fortune 500 manufacturer for R&D. Applied Graphene Materials received a positive notification from the National Aerospace Technology Exploitation Programme (NATEP) regarding its funding application.
