SAN MATEO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Levita Magnetics, a medical technology company, today announced the Levita Magnetic Surgical System has been selected as one of 2016’s ‘Innovations of the Year’ by the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons (SLS). This recognition identifies the most innovative products of the past year that have a multidisciplinary application in minimally invasive surgery.
The Levita Magnetic Surgical System, which recently received CE Mark and FDA clearance, is a first-of-its-kind magnetic surgical system. Initially indicated for gallbladder removal surgery in the U.S., the platform is used to magnetically retract and maneuver the gallbladder, reducing the number of incisions and promoting a less complicated surgery for both surgeons and patients. Prior to the Levita Magnetic Surgical System, surgeons could only maneuver the gallbladder through a hole (port) in the abdominal wall, risking greater damage to the abdominal wall as well as post-surgery complications.
“We are honored our first product was selected by the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons as a 2016 ‘Innovation of the Year,’” said Dr. Alberto Rodriguez-Navarro, surgeon, founder, and chief executive officer of Levita Magnetics. “It is our main goal to advance minimally invasive surgery to further improve patient outcomes. We believe magnetic surgery will not only make an impact on the more than 1 million cholecystectomies performed in the U.S. each year, but that this method of providing surgical retraction may provide a stepping stone to future minimally invasive surgical procedures.”
Levita Magnetics will be recognized at SLS’ Minimally Invasive Surgery Week Annual Meeting & Endo Expo 2016, during the Opening Ceremony on Wednesday, August 31 in Boston.
