WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--For the second year in a row, components of the Klas Telecom Voyager tactical communications suite have been given the Red Dot international design competition award for product design. This year, the prize goes to the Voyager 8 for materials innovation. Klas Telecom’s Voyager 8 is an ultra-portable, low size, weight and power (SWaP), rugged communications system designed to allow rapid deployment of critical data and communications services for military, law enforcement and disaster relief applications. Traditional forward-operating communications packages are large and bulky, but Voyager 8 is different. It is a lightweight, carbon fiber, airline carry-on-size rollaway case.
“One of the focuses in designing the Voyager 8 system was on bringing radically different materials to house solutions for telecommunications technology that needs to survive in the world’s harshest environments,” James Ryan, a consultant from Dolmen Design Firm said. “We played around with many different materials in the process finally selecting carbon fiber for its lightweight durability.”
“We wanted to design a durable system, but with low SWaP so our customers can deploy communications packages with ease,” Klas Telecom President of Global Innovation Ryan Kendrick said. “Making the Voyager 8 case with carbon fiber and building a streamlined, scalable power system into the chassis enabled us to do that.”
The uniqueness of the Voyager 8 design concept has made it the system of choice for virtually anyone that operates it. Voyager is currently deployed throughout the U.S. Department of Defense, with heavy adoption by the U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM). Many organizations within U.S. law enforcement agencies, international governments, and partner nations have also deployed the system.
