ATLANTA--()--Georgia Cyber Academy (GCA), an accredited, full-time, online public charter school, celebrates the latest accomplishment of student Damácia Howard, a rising 8th grader, who won the Miss Georgia Pre-Teen National American Miss Competition on July 2, 2016.

“Damácia is a wonderful example of the many types of unique and ambitious students supported by GCA,” said Matthew Arkin, Georgia Cyber Academy Head of School. “Community service is just one of the many extracurricular activities in which GCA students often excel.”

Damácia is a straight-A student at GCA and was the Georgia State Middle-Level Winner of the Prudential Spirit of Community Award earlier this year, which honors America’s youth for outstanding commitments to volunteerism. With the help of a national charity called Books for Africa, Damácia donated thousands of books that she collected from her community of Union City, Georgia.

As Miss Georgia Pre-Teen, Damácia will serve as a role model to young people in her community and throughout the state. She will continue to support Books for Africa and volunteer at Ronald McDonald House. Later this year, she will compete for the national pre-teen title in California.

“I think I have an advantage as an online student,” Damácia said. “I have access to a lot more resources, and I constantly use the Internet.”

This was Damácia’s second year competing in the Miss Georgia Pre-Teen competition.

“Her dad and I are just awed by her determination and commitment to her goals,” said Regina Howard, Damácia’s mother.

At GCA, Damácia is able to work at a pace that makes her feel comfortable and at the level that is best for her. While she is entering 8th grade in the fall, Damácia will be taking 9th grade literature and high school biology and physical science.

“As a GCA student, Damácia is confident and focused on her education,” Regina said. “We wanted her to be in a safe environment, free from the types of distractions that could be found in brick-and-mortar schools. The curriculum at GCA is rigorous, and the environment is set up for the students to achieve greatness and be successful.”
