DENVER--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Samsung Electronics America at ISTE 2016 has debuted a new solution to help improve student reading comprehension. Designed in partnership with Pearson, Samsung Literacy Lab combines Pearson’s iLit software with Samsung Chromebook 3 or Galaxy Tab® E devices to create a digital learning solution focused on improving and advancing vocabulary, comprehension and writing skills. In addition to Samsung Literacy Lab, Samsung will display its full suite of education solutions in booth #2500 at the Colorado Convention Center from June 26-29.
According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), just 37 percent of high school seniors were ready for college-level reading, and about 20 percent of Americans 15 and older lack basic functional literacy skills, as reported by the United Nations. Today’s learners are digital natives and thrive in technology-driven environments. Molded on the foundation of the three Cs – conversion, curriculum and collaboration – Samsung’s Literacy Lab helps close these gaps and encourage tomorrow’s thinkers and creators to excel.
“Beyond transforming teaching and learning, technology can be used to engage students and improve critical literacy skills in struggling readers,” said Ted Brodheim, vice president of Vertical Business at Samsung Electronics America. “Students who are unable to read at their grade level are at least twice as likely to drop out of school, according to a recent Scholastic report. Samsung is committed to providing solutions that are targeted at closing the gap in reading comprehension and arming teachers with the necessary tools to carry this out.”
Available to students grades 3 to 12, Samsung Literacy Lab is a mobile solution that’s easily transported to reach students in any location. Offered in packages of 10, the solution includes:
- 10 Samsung Chromebook 3 or Galaxy Tab® E devices
- 10 Pearson iLit licenses – iLit 20, iLit 45, iLit 90 or iLit ELL
- One day of professional development to ensure effective implementation
“Since debuting iLit in 2013, we have seen impressive learning outcomes, including improved student literacy skills by more than two grade levels in a single school year,” said Doug McCollum, who runs the Intervention, ELL, Pre-K and Supplemental Solutions businesses at Pearson. “By pairing iLit’s proven instructional model with Samsung’s leading Chromebook and tablet devices, we believe we can help even more schools nationwide see a vast improvement in reading, writing and vocabulary skills with Samsung Literacy Lab.”
Samsung will also bring together educators, technology experts and education providers to discuss virtual reality and literacy in two panel sessions:
