Insurance carriers will soon be forced to insure mobility instead of cars

LONDON--()--Traditional car service providers such as insurers, car makers but also breakdown assistance companies, auto clubs and leasing companies, are all being challenged for customer ownership by young innovative mobility operators.

As part of the TU-Automotive Detroit 2016 Conference on June 9, Frederic Bruneteau, Managing Director of PTOLEMUS Consulting Group will moderate the debates around the impact of these connected mobility offerings on the auto insurance sector with senior executives from Farmers Insurance, TheFloow and LexisNexis.

The panel will investigate the transformation of the connected vehicle service markets and the future impact it will have on measuring risk, pricing premiums and handling claims.

Vehicle connectivity is radically changing the future prospects of mobility. For example, the number of cars shared is set to explode from 72,000 today to more than 620,000 in 2020 in North America alone.

It also enables the most forward thinking players to find opportunities outside their traditional silos. Vehicle leasers such as Arval have begun to provide their own low-cost fleet telematics solution. Fuel card suppliers such FleetCor are becoming tolling services operators. Google-backed navigation provider Waze has now launched a car pooling offer, while Apple invested in Didi Chuxing, the largest Chinese ride sharing operator.

Ahead of the show, Frederic Bruneteau commented: β€œIn the car market, connectivity has moved from an aspirational feature to an essential part of the OEM business model and value proposition. The same transformation will also occur throughout all mobility markets.”

Understanding which services have the greatest potential and which players are best positioned to take advantage of these changes in the market is key. These are the objective of the Connected Mobility Global Forecast, published by PTOLEMUS.

The forecast paints a complete picture of the connected mobility services market place, assessing the commercial potential of services such as connected roadside assistance, leasing, usage-based insurance, car pooling and sharing, road user charging and navigation – no less than 14 services are analysed and quantified in total.
