Vidyo Joins the Alliance for Open Media

HACKENSACK, N.J.--()--Vidyo, Inc., a leader in video communication and collaboration, today announced that it has joined the Alliance for Open Media. The Alliance for Open Media is a non-profit organization working to define and develop media technologies that address the need for an open standard for video compression and delivery over the web.

As a member of the Alliance, Vidyo will collaborate with industry leaders in pursuit of an open and royalty-free AOMedia Video codec, AV1. Vidyo’s contributions to the organization will bring to bear its long history of expertise in codec technology and the process of developing standard codecs, with emphasis on interactive real-time communications. The Alliance has made its AV1 codec source code publicly available as an open source project, and the group welcomes contributions from the broader developer community.

“Ever since the company’s founding in 2005, Vidyo has lead the development of standards-based video codecs,” said Dr. Alex Eleftheriadis, Co-Founder and Chief Scientist, Vidyo. “Starting with H.264 SVC, and continuing with H.265 (HEVC) and the open source VP9, we have committed considerable resources together with industry partners for the development of both the video codec as well as its corresponding RTP payload format, which governs transmission over the Internet. The AV1 codec represents an exciting new development in the video industry, and we are looking forward to contributing our expertise to help continue to bring the highest-quality video communications to the market.”

The availability of AOMedia Video as an open source project is an important element in fulfilling the organization’s promise to deliver a next-generation video format that is:

  • Interoperable and open;
  • Optimized for internet delivery;
  • Scalable to any modern device at any bandwidth;
  • Designed with a low computational footprint and optimized for hardware;
  • Capable of consistent, highest-quality, real-time video delivery; and
  • Flexible for both commercial and non-commercial content, including user-generated content.

"We’re pleased to welcome Vidyo to the Alliance for Open Media, reflecting the importance of real-time video communications and collaboration engagement to achieve broad industry adoption," said Gabe Frost, Executive Director, the Alliance for Open Media. "We look forward to Vidyo’s contributions to this significant initiative, which will open the door to a new era of openness and interoperability for internet video."
