About ID2020
ID2020 is a not-for-profit corporation (501(c)(3) status pending) that seeks to build a platform to harness innovation and enable emerging digital technology to address the challenge of creating legal identities for vulnerable populations, including the victims of human trafficking, modern-day slavery and refugee crises around the world. Inspired by UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16 (“The promotion of peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, the provision of access to justice for all, and building effective, accountable institutions at all levels”), Target 9 (“By 2030, provide legal identity for all, including birth registration”), the project brings together private enterprise to develop a global innovation platform as a clearinghouse to coordinate emerging identity technology, and will also benefit other related SDGs.
For the next 15 years (to 2030), ID2020 will lead an annual results-oriented summit to track the progress of the initiative, and to engage business, governments, NGOs, the UN and thought leaders. The inaugural summit will be convened on May 20, 2016, by ID2020 in collaboration with the International Telecommunications Union (the United Nations specialized agency for information and communication technologies) and the United Nations Office for Partnerships.
