Detroit Medical Center Appoints World-Renowned Surgeon To Lead Major Service Line

DETROIT--()--The Detroit Medical Center (DMC) announced today that it has appointed Khaled J. Saleh, M.D. as the new Executive in Chief of DMC Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Service Line, effective June 13.

"DMC is fortunate to have attracted Dr. Saleh, who was recently ranked number 20 among 21,000 joint surgeons globally, and was named the Sangamon Medical Society Innovator of the Year by his colleagues," said Joe Mullany, Detroit Medical Center CEO. "He's undoubtedly a brilliant leader in his field and an exceptional addition to our team."

Dr. Saleh is internationally renowned for cutting-edge surgery related to adult reconstruction and joint replacement. He joins DMC from the Southern Illinois School of Medicine where he served as chairman of orthopaedic surgery and director for clinical and translational research. Dr. Saleh is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of orthopaedic conditions.

"In his role, Dr. Saleh will provide leadership for academic and clinical activities, and work collaboratively with other disciplines to advance the orthopaedic and sports medicine service line toward national and international prominence," said Karen Fordham, CEO of Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital and Regional Service Line Leader, DMC Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine. "This is a rapidly growing service line. The need is great and DMC intends to be the leader in filling that need in this region and beyond."

Considered one of the leading experts on health services research and policy, Dr. Saleh's work has been supported by nearly $7 million in grant funding, resulting in more than 300 scientific publications, six textbooks and mentorship for hundreds of students, residents and fellows. His achievements on improving health system processes, health-related outcomes and quality of care, while achieving strong financial and strategic goals have been recognized by leading institutions such as: the Institute of Medicine, National Institute of Health and the National Academies Research Council.

“DMC has an outstanding national reputation for providing high-quality orthopaedic care to its patients," Dr. Saleh said. "In my 20 years’ experience as an orthopaedic surgeon, I have seen first hand the devastating impact bone and joint diseases have on the quality of life of patients and their families. I feel privileged to be working among outstanding surgeons, physicians, scientists, trainees, community and national partners, and the staff to help us become leaders in this fight."

Dr. Saleh obtained his undergraduate and medical education at the University of Western Ontario in Canada. After completing his orthopaedic residency at the University of Toronto, he completed two fellowships in joint replacement: one at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Toronto and the other at the prestigious Hospital for Special Surgery at Cornell Medical College in New York City. Dr. Saleh then completed three master's degrees - in public health at the esteemed Centre for Health Economics, in policy analysis at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, and in health care management at Harvard University.
