Healthcare VRI Leader, Stratus Video, Announces Remote Certified Deaf Interpreters for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing Population

Certified Deaf Interpreters will be available on the Stratus Video Platform on March 15, 2016

CLEARWATER, Fla.--()--Stratus Video Interpreting, an industry leader in innovative video technology, is launching a new way to communicate with the deaf/hard of hearing population with Remote Certified Deaf Interpretation (Remote CDI). Stratus is the only video remote interpretation (VRI) provider to offer Remote CDI. This will allow healthcare providers nationwide to effectively communicate with the portion of the deaf and hard of hearing population that uses other forms of signed languages, significantly reducing healthcare disparities for this community.

Stratus Video leverages their state of the art video platform to route video calls to specialized interpreter stations with two interpreters, one a Certified Deaf Interpreter and one an ASL interpreter. Sign Languages takes many forms, and as specialists in deaf culture and American Sign Language, CDIs act as intermediaries between deaf individuals and ASL interpreters. First the deaf individual and the CDI converse, the CDI interprets that message into ASL and the ASL interpreter then voices the message for the provider in English, and vice versa, ensuring effective and trustworthy communication.

Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI) is a certificate provided by the Registry of the Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. (RID). Anyone holding the certificate has passed both a knowledge and performance exam. Certified Deaf Interpreters are also called deaf interpreters and relay/intermediary interpreters.

Stratus developed Remote CDI interpretation following feedback that many hospitals wanted to enhance communication with deaf patients, even with ASL interpretation readily available onsite and over video. Cultural misunderstandings can occur, thus frustrations can run high. By providing Remote, on-demand CDI, Stratus can elevate the level of care of deaf individuals nationwide, and improve communications for healthcare providers.

“CDI and/or qualified Deaf Interpretation (DI) is a crucial, yet often over looked communication tool for the deaf/hard of hearing population,” said Chris Wagner, president of the National Association for the Deaf. “We have been looking forward to a better, more effective way to enable communication between ASL users and their hearing healthcare providers for a long time.”

Stratus understands the difficulties that arise for both patient and provider when communication is not effective and developed remote CDI as a response. Remote CDI will be available starting on March 15, 2016 and will be automatically added to all existing accounts.

With a focus on increasing patient safety, Remote CDI is an innovative patient service solution available through the Stratus Video application. Stratus Video’s innovative approach to improving communication has garnered it a customer base of over 1,200 hospitals since the company’s 2011 launch.
