VANCOUVER, British Columbia--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Meta Founder and CEO Meron Gribetz previewed a new generation of augmented reality (AR) technology at the TED 2016 conference today by showcasing the capabilities of the Meta 2 Development Kit, the company’s new product to be released later this year.
Meta 2’s see-through headset is based on extensive neuroscience research and is the first AR product designed from the ground up to support the way people are built to behave and think.
“As much as technology and computing devices have pushed humanity forward, the form factors haven’t changed much in decades. The industry continues to force people to conform to the technology rather than the other way around. With the trend toward smaller screens and multiple devices, the problem has only gotten worse,” said Gribetz in his talk.
“Meta is upending this paradigm and introducing a new generation of ‘natural machines’ that give people the freedom to move, communicate and work in ways that seamlessly connect their digital and physical worlds. By improving the relationship between people and computers, we’re able to foster deeper understanding, freer expression and optimal productivity.”
Meta worked closely with the customers of its earlier Meta 1 Development Kit to explore how customers really wanted to use AR technology across a broad range of industries, including medicine, education and manufacturing. An early example of the compelling new AR applications enabled by Meta 2 is a surgical planning and assistance application built by the 3D lab at the Radboud University Medical Centre in the Netherlands. The app has been successfully used in surgery with human patients, resulting in cost and time savings, as well as better patient outcomes.

About Meta
Born in NYC and raised in Silicon Valley, Meta has been defining the field of augmented reality (AR) since the company’s inception in 2012. After a successful Kickstarter campaign, Meta was selected by Y Combinator for seed funding. Meta entered the marketplace with the first see-through headset that allowed wearers to move and manipulate 3D content intuitively, using their hands. With the introduction of the groundbreaking Meta 2 Development Kit at TED 2016, Meta is once again redefining the market and delivering a new generation of natural machines that will become a healthy, vital extension of who we are.
