InvenSense® Delivers Complete Wearable Wellness/Fitness MEMS Sensor Platform to Enable Fast Time-to-Market Product Launches

Delivers all of the Wellness/Fitness Sensor-related Context and Analytics Required from Today’s Smart Watch or Activity Products

SAN JOSE, Calif.--()--InvenSense Inc., (NYSE: INVN), a leading provider of MEMS sensor platform solutions, announced the InvenSense ICM-30631 wearable Sensor System on Chip (SoC) platform that delivers a total solution of sensor software-related features required for a wellness/fitness-centric smart watch or activity tracker. The ICM-30631 SoC includes InvenSense’s 6-axis integrated MEMS (3-axis accelerometer + 3-axis gyroscope) motion sensors, Embedded Cortex class processor, and InvenSense’s Digital Motion Processor (DMP) blocks for efficient lower power sensor processing in a small 3mm x 3mm 24-QFN package. The complete wearable platform delivers activity recognition (walk, run, bike, still, in-car), Photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor-related measurements (motion artifact correction and R-R interval for Heart Rate Variation), sleep quality analysis, calorie counter, speed/distance, and floors climbed, along with valuable wrist worn gestures like bring-to-see and shake. The InvenSense wearable platform is intended to provide all the essential wrist-worn wearable features related to context, vital sign monitoring and inertial sensor-related analytics. The wearable platform assists an OEM’s speed to market, utilizes less of its constrained resources and allows the OEM to focus on supplementary differentiating features on-top of those offered by the ICM-30631.

Today, the wrist-worn wearables market requires OEMs to deliver wellness and fitness-related services, a key reason the market traction for these devices is increasing exponentially. Accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer, PPG, and pressure sensor processing are essential for smart watches and activity trackers to enable these services, yet OEMs need a deep technical understanding to yield the valuable contextual and analytical data from the complex sensor outputs. InvenSense has overcome this challenge by interfacing its FireFly™ SoC with leading market sensors in the areas of wellness/fitness and derived the algorithms needed to deliver activity/context, accurate heart rate, sleep metrics, number of floors climbed, and speed/distance of walking and running. For additional speed/distance (and route) accuracy, for GPS-enabled wrist-worn devices that track the users’ walk/run/hike analytics, InvenSense recently launched Coursa Sports, a cloud-based Software as a Service (SaaS) fitness tracking sensor platform solution that delivers the same accuracy as GPS at a fraction of the power due to its GPS duty cycling and inertial dead reckoning algorithms.

“Delivering all the core sensor analytics and context in a small 3x3mm SoC is an innovation that will enable our wearable customers to focus on additional software and hardware-related features that can really differentiate them from their competitors,” said Eitan Medina, vice president of marketing and product management at InvenSense. “Activity recognition and in-activity heart rate monitoring, in addition to analytics related to sleep, floor count, and speed/distance are the basic building blocks of any wrist worn wellness/fitness device. These require a great deal of engineering know-how to deliver accurately. InvenSense’s new ICM-30631 wearable FireFly SoC platform can do this efficiently, accurately, and at low power.”

InvenSense’s ICM-30631 complete wearable platform is sampling today and will be in mass production in Q2 of 2016. InvenSense is exhibiting in booth #36217 in South Hall 4 at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show taking place in Las Vegas, Nevada from January 6 - 9, 2016.
