O’Neil Firms Begin Next Half-Century of Service with an Infusion of New Leadership

LOS ANGELES--()--William O’Neil + Co. Incorporated, a registered investment advisor, and its affiliate, O’Neil Securities, Incorporated, a registered broker/dealer, have strategically expanded their relationship base and appointed six new executives with deep industry experience and capability. The new additions come just as the two firms, which were established 52 years ago by the investing legend William J. O’Neil, begin a new chapter of partnership that aims to enrich the service offering to clients of both entities.

William O’Neil + Co. has continually refined its alpha-driven method and remained at the forefront of technology in adapting it to a changing industry. As the firm enters its next half-century, it remains focused on its bespoke relationship style, while leveraging its stock-picking performance to expand beyond its traditional niche. “We no longer want to be the ‘best kept secret on Wall Street’,” said Steven L. Birch, President of the firm.

O’Neil Securities has been a member of the NYSE since 1964 and continues to fully staff a brokerage desk there, which enables it to make client-specific decisions at the point of sale throughout the day, with special emphasis on openings, closings, and liquidity volatility events. The firm executes on an agency basis and does not make markets, so client orders are never in conflict with proprietary trading accounts.

Robert “Bob” Lyons has been named Chief Operating Officer of William O’Neil + Co. Lyons will drive the strategic direction of the firm’s Institutional Services offerings and provide operational leadership, as the firm continues to grow globally. Lyons brings a wealth of experience and proven leadership, having held multiple executive positions at Bear Stearns during his more than 20 years in the industry. Those positions include Global Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer for its Equities Division as well as Co-Head of Sales Trading. Other positions Lyons has held include COO at Watermill Trading LLC; Senior Vice President at MFG; Global COO, Investment Banking at UBS; and most recently as senior advisor at McKinsey & Company.

“As we adjust our business strategy to better capitalize on our firm’s 50 years of market insight, we see Bob, with his industry leadership capability, as the perfect translator of our success,” Birch said.

Michael P. McCauley has been appointed Chief Executive Officer of O’Neil Securities. He has a 22-year record of leadership in the investment industry—successfully directing organizations, mitigating risk exposure, and integrating technology to enhance processes that fuel operational excellence. He began his career as a Senior Equity Trader at Fidelity Investments in Boston, moving on to become President of Pulse Trading (acquired by State Street) then Head of Global Trading at Pyramis Global Advisors, a Fidelity Investments company. He also sits on the Board of Directors of Clough Capital Partners, Boston. McCauley’s leadership skills are underscored by his record of service in the U.S. Army, where he held multiple senior leadership roles as a commissioned officer and dually-rated aviator.

“My family’s history with the New York Stock Exchange and stock investing generally is a matter of great importance to me and, having found a leader for the brokerage side of such exceptional quality, I see a bright future for our firms and the level of service they bring to our valued clients,” said William J. O’Neil, Chairman of the O’Neil Companies.

Gregory Jannetta has joined William O’Neil + Co. as Executive Vice President – Head of Institutional Sales. Jannetta will lead the sales team’s global reach, focusing on equity research and advisory services. Jannetta has more than 20 years of institutional sales experience, having held senior executive positions in managing sales teams for Janney Capital Markets, Macquarie Capital, and UBS Investment Bank. Previously, he achieved top research sales rankings in a position with Credit Suisse. Jannetta started his Wall Street career at Sanford C. Bernstein, selling equity research.

“Greg’s excellent record leading global sales teams will immediately push our international goals into new territory,” said Birch.

Michael Gardner, CFA, has joined William O’Neil + Co. as Executive Vice President—Director of Research. Combining strategic vision with experience nurturing analyst teams, Gardner has organized the firm’s research offering under investing themes and is further building out its analyst team. Gardner brings to the firm nearly two decades of experience implementing highly successful growth initiatives at Wedbush Securities. His numerous executive roles there include Vice President & Managing Director—Director of Research; Senior Vice President & Managing Director—Head of Investment Banking Division; Executive Vice President—Co-Head of Capital Markets; and Executive Vice President—Head of Private Client Services Group. Most recently, he held the position of Managing Director, Wedbush Asset Management LLC.

“The thematic organization of our international equity research has been a perfect answer to the intense interconnectedness of global markets, and we want more institutions to experience our success,” said Birch.

Willie Yandow has joined William O’Neil + Co. as Managing Director. He brings more than 20 years of experience at Deutsche Bank, where he became expert at growing accounts by understanding clients’ investing style and tailoring his services to their needs. Yandow held multiple positions at Deutsche Bank during his tenure, including Account Captain, Institutional Equity Sales, Special Situations Accounts; Managing Director of Institutional Middle Market Sales; and Regional Manager, Boston Office US Equity Sales.

Dean C. Kim has joined William O’Neil + Co. as Executive Director—Research Analyst. Kim joins the team after spending 15 years in the industry. Coupling Kim’s experience with the O’Neil methodology of stock analysis will help broaden the firm’s research offerings. He began as a research analyst for Acumen Capital Partners in Calgary, Alberta, before moving on to positions mainly based in Hong Kong and Korea, at Deloitte Consulting; UBS Investment Bank, where he was Director—Asia Regional Assistant Product Manager; Lehman Brothers; and BNP Paribas Securities.
